Breakdown
MS. BLAKK FOR PRESIDENT
Casting Note: Everyone plays multiple characters, with one main character and additional others as needed. Actors must be able to transform, and be comfortable in styles ranging from grounded, detailed naturalism to high camp performance. They all must move extremely well (or dance) and they must all be able to carry a tune (or be real singers). It is a plus if they play an instrument (all instruments helpful but particularly looking for guitar, woodwind such as saxophone, or any kind of brass such as trumpet, trombone, tuba, french horn, etc.).
SEEKING:
Mark, As Cast: Male – 30s, cisgender, any ethnicity. Mark is one of the founders of Queer Nation in Chicago 1990. An impassioned activist. Mark can be fiery, and angry at our government or at life – but when he’s not, he’s soft, charming, a bit flirtatious - a beautiful, angelic soul. He is diagnosed with HIV early in the play and his illness progresses subtly throughout. Ideally a strong singer and mover. A plus if he plays an instrument.
Q/Marilyn Monroe/David Bowie/Uncle Sam/Queer Nation Activist/Police, As Cast: Any gender or no gender. Any age and ethnicity. Tall and/or lithe. Androgynous, gender-fluid, and one who embodies the essence of Queerness as fluidity and a resistance to the pressure of conforming to one identity or societal norms. Charismatic, magnetic, beautiful and impossible to look away from. They are graceful and other-worldly. They must be a fierce dancer and a superb singer as they will lead several production numbers. A plus if they play an instrument.
Lenny/Member A/Hat Lady, As Cast: 30s-50s. Any ethnicity. Able to do male drag and/or pass as a man at times. The main role of Lenny is a cisgender gay man 40s to 50s (but could be younger). Lenny is the head of a Gay cable TV station in NYC. A bulldog of sorts – gruff and charismatic. A larger-than-life character clad in spandex, black leather jacket, horseshoe moustache and a cowboy hat. Must sing and dance well.
JJ/Audience Member/Queer Nation Activist/Police, As Cast: Male, any ethnicity, mid 20s - late 30s. JJ is a young gay man living on his own in NYC, trying to make a career as a photographer. A boyish energy. He is somewhat naïve, curious, and delightful in his innocence. On the flip side, they play a believable and menacing cop. A great singer and dancer, and a plus if they play an instrument.
Glenda Orgasm/Audience Member/Queer Nation Activist/Police, As Cast: Male, 30s, any ethnicity. Glenda is a drag queen who hosts her own cable show. Will double as various cisgender gay men as well, including a cop. As the drag queen Glenda, she is hilarious, out there, quick-witted, theatrical, funny as hell. A strong singer and dancer, and a plus if they play an instrument.
