Note: All actors must demonstrate that they can vocally and physically fill a large outdoor stage.
- DUKE SENIOR / DUKE FREDERICK (double): Duke Senior — the “good” duke in banishment, living in the forest and leading the utopian society of exiled lords. Doubles as Duke Frederick, his brother and usurper, a cruel authoritarian ruler of the court, creating a militarized surveillance stage of absolute power.
- ORLANDO: Younger son of Sir Rowland de Boys. An upstart overshadowed by his older brother, looking for a better existence until he falls unexpectedly in love and finds himself on the run from an authoritarian regime. Sings. May play guitar/mandolin/ukulele, etc.
- OLIVER de BOYS: Eldest son of Sir Rowland de Boys. Attempts to have Orlando murdered but undergoes a transformation in the forest, atoning for his fratricidal impulses and replacing hate with love.
- CHARLES THE WRESTLER / JACQUES de BOYS / AMIENS (triple): Charles — a wrestler at the court with a flair for the theatrical in the ring (no size requirement, but requires movement skills). Doubles as Amiens, a lord attending Duke Senior who becomes a blissedâout flowerâpower forest child in Arden. Also doubles as Jacques de Boys, the third de Boys brother who appears at the play’s end to deliver news of victory over Duke Frederick.
- CELIA: Daughter of Duke Frederick; a wise and true friend to her cousin who defends and conspires with Rosalind to escape the court and begin a new life in exile.
- ROSALIND: Daughter of Duke Senior and heroine of the story. Rosalind liberates herself from the authoritarian court, disguises herself as a man, journeys to the forest of Arden and creates a new life where the strict rules of the court do not apply. In her male disguise she woos Orlando in a performance that destabilizes the gender binary. Smart, vulnerable, and complex.
- TOUCHSTONE: A clown of the court and expert in city satire and wry humor. The ultimate fishâoutâofâwater in the forest; accompanies Rosalind and Celia on their journey.
- JAQUES: A lord attending Duke Senior who becomes a philosopher of the woods, exploring existential questions of human suffering and harmony with humor and vulnerability while in exile. Must have effortlessness and wisdom with language and verse.
- LE BEAU / CORIN / PHOEBE (triple): Le Beau — a sympathetic steward of Duke Frederick’s court whose empathy opens an opportunity for Orlando to escape. Doubles as Corin, a kind shepherd in Arden, and also as Phoebe, a shepherdess who falls in love with Rosalind when Rosalind is disguised as the maleâidentifying Ganymede.
- ADAM / SILVIUS (double): Adam — the old servant to the de Boys family whose loyalty and kindness are a pillar of resistance to tyranny. Doubles as Silvius, the energetic youthful shepherd head over heels in love with Phoebe. This doubling requires a skilled mover and physical performer to create distinct characters on opposite ends of the age/energy spectrum, both with big heart.
