DR SEUSS’S HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS, THE MUSICAL
Adapted from Dr. Seuss’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas
Timothy Mason, book & lyrics
Mel Marvin, music
Reh: 10/26/26; Open: 11/12/26; Close: 12/27/26; Possible Extension: 1/3/2027
SEEKING:
The Grinch - Our main protagonist. He has spent years living in seclusion. He is fed-up with Christmas and ingeniously decides to steal it. A beastly, charming, often silly curmudgeon. He is hilariously scary but with a softy’s heart underneath — think more Wile E. Coyote than Voldemort. He fancies himself a Vaudeville superstar with “champion-stock” DNA and has a personality that outsizes everybody else in Whoville.
Gender: male
Vocal range top: D4
Vocal range bottom: D2
Old Max - The storyteller who unexpectedly has a final memory that inspires him to celebrate the night of the Grinch’s transformation with the audience. A wise and somewhat weary old soul on the last legs of a spectacular life. He is trustworthy and charming and can “spin a yarn” like the best of them.
Gender: male
Vocal range top: E4
Vocal range bottom: Bb2
Young Max - Misery loves company, but this peppy new pup refuses to succumb to the Grinch’s negativity and pessimism. He is lovable, charming, and always eager to please. He is indefatigably positive and fun. Everything the Grinch tries to destroy, Max catches before it breaks, never tiring of the Grinch’s antics.
Gender: male
Vocal range top: F#4
Vocal range bottom: Bb2
Cindy Lou Who - She is the youngest child of the central Who family. She is the one person with a genuine heart of gold that can find and express love to the Grinch. She is still young enough to be guided by her sense of wonder and empathy and believes in the possibility for goodness in the Grinch.
Gender: female
Vocal range top: F5
Vocal range bottom: A3
Papa Who - The Father of the central Who Family. He is the calm eye of the storm, goodness and confidence pours out of him. He accidentally indoctrinates the children of Whoville with the story of the boogeyman Grinch.
Gender: male
Vocal range top: E4
Vocal range bottom: Bb2
Mom Who - The Mother of the central Who Family. She is overwhelmed by the Christmas hysteria, and she is unsuccessfully struggling to maintain control of both her children and Grandpa and Grandma Who. Adorably annoying, funny, and a loving mother.
Gender: female
Vocal range top: E5
Vocal range bottom: C4
Grandpa Who - The eldest of the central Who family. He is gruff, comically grumpy, and enjoys antagonizing Mama Who and trying to scare the children with ghost stories. He loves Christmas and his grandchildren but is driven batty by both.
Gender: male
Vocal range top: E4
Vocal range bottom: D3
Grandma Who - The matriarch of the central Who family who can solve any problem, a peacemaker. She is loving and warm. The children respect and listen to her, and she has the patience to calm both them and Mama Who.
Gender: female
Vocal range top: E5
Vocal range bottom: D4
MISERY
Based on the novel by Stephen King

SEEKING:
ANNIE WILKES (Female Presenting, 40s – 60s – any Race) A nurse who comes to Paul’s rescue (seemingly), Annie seems to be a kind, tender woman who cares deeply for Paul, even if she does seem slightly off. As Paul grows to know her it becomes clearer that Annie is manipulative, cunning, and hides a deep set and terrifying malice behind her cheery simple façade.
PAUL SHELDON (Male Presenting, Late 30s – Early 60s – any race) A famed romance novelist tired of the series that has brought him the most acclaim. Returning from a retreat to finish his most recent work, he is involved in a terrible car crash that leaves him with broken legs and unable to care for himself. He’s thoughtful, if not a touch arrogant, and extremely crafty. He quickly realizes how dangerous his situation is and must use anything and everything at his disposal to survive.
BUSTER (Male Presenting, Late 30s – Late 60s, any race) The Sheriff of a nearby town searching for Paul. Very friendly with possible hopes of something more with Annie.

Huey Lewis & Huey Lewis and the News, music & lyrics
Reh: 6/21/27; Open: 7/8/27; Close: 8/22/27; Possible Extension: 8/29/2027
SEEKING:
BOBBY STIVIC – Early to mid 30s, male presenting - Formerly the lead singer of a failed rock band in 1980s Chicago. Bobby is full of charisma and charm. Currently working at a family-run cardboard company in Milwaukee trying to figure his life out. He’s passionate, lavish and impulsive – and a little rough around the edges. His ambition is fueled by the complicated legacy of his alcoholic father. Star presence on stage; a rock tenor voice and hugely compelling and comedic. Guitar a bonus but not required.
CASSANDRA STONE - Early to mid 30s, female presenting - Charmingly neurotic and awkward, she’s a “numbers girl” who has left her high-powered finance job to help her father save the family company in the wake of her mother’s death. Often stuck in her head and weighed down by self-doubt, her attempts to act like a boss are usually hilarious. She struggles to let herself live in the moment – until she meets Bobby. An excellent comic with star presence and pop/rock vocals.
ROZ - 40s, female presenting – Smart, put together, quick witted woman who heads up human resources for Stone’s company. Having been forced out of the music department at Howard University by her mother, Roz has a soft spot for Bobby, a fellow refugee from the music industry. An excellent comic with major vocals, big pop/rock belter.
MR. STONE - Early 60s, male presenting - Cassandra's Father, Bobby's boss and now a widower, he is a former ball player and all-around good guy, trying to manage the grief from the loss of his wife. With the corporate upheavals of the 1980’s encroaching, his family business can’t compete - and is suffering. He is secretly paying for budget shortfalls and even payroll – by mortgaging his house. Unwilling to make changes, he is still holding onto his wife’s memory by preserving the company as it was when she was alive. He is grounded, kind-hearted athletic and buoyant with a baritone voice with high falsetto.
TUCKER - 30s, male presenting – a 1980s poster boy for preppy style, he seems to have stepped directly out of the pages of the Princeton catalogue (his alma mater) encompassing everything we remember about an 80s Yuppy. A fiercely competitive financier, he is used to getting everything he wants. He has still not recovered from losing Cassandra when she went home after her mother died. A technically perfect physical specimen, he has something of the Ted Bundy living just behind the eyes. Either he wins or everyone else loses. He is sharp, smart, witty and highly physically adroit with a strong pop-tenor voice.
PAIGE - Early to mid 30s, female presenting – Cassandra's highly opinionated and vocal best friend from college, she is a new mother feeling all the postpartum madness that comes with a new stage of life, marriage and friendships. Eager to recapture the freewheeling feeling of being young and open, she projects some of her own issues onto Cassandra – but ultimately discovers a new version of herself when she takes over a flailing aerobics class and finds her inner Richard Simmons/Jane Fonda. She is uniquely spirited, funny, and fearless with strong pop vocals.
FJORD - 40s, male presenting – the CEO and inventor of an IKEA-like Swedish furnishing company, he is an idiosyncratic business genius, expert in controlling people by sending bizarrely mixed signals and keeping them guessing at all times. An immigrant to Sweden, he speaks with a somewhat indecipherable Nordic dialect, influenced by his international upbringing by a series of nannies and ultra-wealthy world peripatetic parents. A lonely overgrown rich kid who never learned to make genuine connections, he ultimately finds joy and satisfaction in becoming part of the “Stone family.” A brilliant comic with a good singing voice.
ELI – Late 20s - 30s, male presenting – Bobby’s younger cousin, he is the innocent, thoughtful heart of the band. And its drummer. He pulls at Bobby’s heartstrings when he reminds him of where he came from, why he started playing music, and what his father wanted before he died. He is soulful and witty with an excellent pop rock tenor. Drumming a bonus but not required.
GLENN – Mid-30s, male presenting – considers himself to be the realist of the band, but actually just angry at life. A bass player with a need to sing lead. He wants to be seen/heard. Rather than looking for new ideas, he clings to old grudges and paradigms that keep him from embracing the opportunities in front of him. Also, he still lives in his mother’s basement. An excellent comic with an excellent pop rock tenor. Bass a bonus but not required.
JJ – Mid-30s, male presenting – Earnest and kind-hearted, slightly stoned at all times, he lives in the moment with a brain that functions slowly, as if the gears are rusty but determined to work. He takes everything more seriously than he should – which makes him quite funny without realizing it. A guitar player happy being in the background, he stays out of the in-fighting and is always up for giving people another chance. An excellent comic with soul and a pop rock bari-tenor voice. Guitar a bonus but not required.
WYATT – Mid-30s, male presenting - Paige's husband and Tucker's best friend. He's hyper-passionate about everything he does; be it singing with Tucker in their college a cappella band, cutting loose on a staycation in Chicago, and most of all, loving his wife.
