Breakdown

RABBI (“Rabbi” Josef Roman Cykowski): 65-75, High Baritone-Tenor. G2-F4. Our narrator, wise, truthful, self-deprecating. A sharp wit. A peacemaker and conflict avoider. A devout Jew.

COMEDIAN HARMONISTS – ALL MUST BE EXCEPTIONAL SINGERS AND MUSICIANS AND SUPERB WITH HARMONIES: AS WELL AS EQUALLY STRONG ACTORS WITH A STRONG COMEDIC SIDE

  • YOUNG RABBI: 28 – 35, the same as Rabbi, 30 years earlier. Vocal Range: High baritone. C3-A4 (full voice).
  • HARRY (Harry Frommerman): 28 to 35, Vocal Range: Tenor. E3-D5 (to Ab4 full voice). Self-taught genius with an inexplicable talent with a passion and vision rare in his world, talks and thinks fast. Has a disheveled look about him and is a Jew who is completely assimilated into the fabric of German society.
  • BOBBY (Robert Biberti): 25 – 35, Vocal Range: Bass. F2-Eb4. The uniquely talented bass of the group. Chooses his words carefully. Shrewd. Smart. Opinionated. Sensible. A proud German who probably sees himself much as he sees his country—the victim of overpowering circumstance. On stage, he’s a true comic.
  • ERICH (Erich Collin): 25 – 35, Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor. C3-C5 (to Bb4 full voice). Well-bred, sophisticated second tenor, extremely well educated and somewhat pretentious. A man of manners but an enigma to many.
  • CHOPIN (Erwin “Chopin” Bootz): 28 – 35, Vocal Range: Tenor. D3-D5 (to Ab4 full voice). A virtuoso pianist and singer. Devilishly handsome. A street kid who made a name for himself. Exudes sex. Earthy and direct. He tends to always choose the expedient solution.
  • LESH (Ari Leshnikoff): 25 – 35, Vocal Range: Tenor. F3-F5 (to C5 full voice). A charmingly innocent first tenor of incomparable ability and talent. Exuberant, expressive, animated, and possessing a near-childlike enthusiasm for life. He is without pretense. If he feels it, you see it. In many ways, the beating heart of the group.

SUPPORTING CAST:

  • MARY PANZRAM: 28 – 35, Rabbi’s fiancée and eventual wife. She is beautiful, thoughtful and supportive but free-thinking and independent. A Gentile who marries her ultimate soulmate, who happens to be a Jew. Vocal Range: Soprano. G3-A5.
  • RUTH STERN: 28 – 35, Alto G3-F#5 (mix/belt). A gorgeous, dark-haired Jewish woman of great passion for many causes, and equally great emotional volatility. Equally as charismatic as her eventual husband Chopin.
  • JOSEPHINE BAKER AND OTHERS: 20s, Vocal Range: Mix to an F. The legendary, iconic dancer, singer and comedienne. Gorgeous, courageous, funny, sensual. Black. Female identifying.
  • STANDARTENFUHRER AND OTHERS: 28 – 35, A colonel in the SS and a fan of the group. Sophisticated, well-educated, almost courtly. Baritone.
  • OBERSTUNFUHRER AND OTHERS: 30-40, mid-rank Nazi officer, most senior officer in this story, authoritative, other roles, Baritone, dance a plus.
  • TITUS AND OTHERS: 25 – 45, Bolshevik activists, protesters, friends with Ruth, Tenor, dance a plus.
  • ROSA AND OTHERS: 25 – 45, Bolshevik activist with Titus, Sop/Belt, dance a plus.
  • CLARA AND OTHERS: 25 – 45, Bolshevik activist, Sop/Belt, dance a plus.
