Based on the beloved novel, The Snow Goose is a soaring new musical about connection, healing, and the quiet heroism of the human spirit. On the windswept coast of Essex, England, an unlikely bond forms between Philip, a reclusive artist scarred by society, and Frith, a resilient orphan. Together, they nurse an injured snow goose back to flight and in doing so, begin to heal wounds of their own. Over a decade-long friendship shadowed by the approach of war, Frith dares to imagine a life beyond her village, while Philip confronts the question of whether humanity, including his own, is worth saving. Brought together by chance, their bond becomes a lifeline—one that will shape them both in ways neither could have imagined.
NOTE: Performers with a disability, not limited to, but including people with physical disabilities and/or facial differences are encouraged to audition.
[PHILIP RHAYADER] – Character is male. 30s-50s. Any ethnicity. A scruff and unruly shell hiding a tender and poetic interior - A village outcast, living in an abandoned lighthouse. A man with visible physical difference, Philip has been exiled from his community after a bullying incident forced him to become violent - and now severed from humanity, he passes his time sailing, building, creating sculptures from washed up junk and taking care of local birds. British accent. (Dialect coach provided.)
[FRITH] – Character is female. 20s to play 15-25. Any ethnicity. Inquisitive and free-spirited, Frith is a teenage girl from a coastal fishing village. Frith has never known beyond the boundaries of her village and its surrounding marshlands. Essex/East Anglia accent (dialect coach provided). Mezzo Sop (A3 - Eb5). A clean, non-traditional sound with folk inflections.
[THE BARD] – Character is male. 35-55. Any ethnicity. A storyteller and folk singer who plays the Essex circuit. He regales locals and visitors alike with tales and legends of the coast. He is speaking to us now many years after Frith and Philip saved the snow goose, but seems to know the legend well. Folk singer. Guitar or fiddle proficiency is encouraged but not required. Essex/East Anglia accent (dialect coach provided). Folk Tenor (A2 - G#4). A unique voice who can tell a story through folk song.
[WILF] – Character is male. 20s to play 15-25. Any ethnicity. A local lad from the same fishing village as Frith. He is confident, charming and often assumes the role of the leader in their group of friends. Wilf has always harbored affection for Frith and, as they grow together, this only strengthens. Essex/East Anglia accent (dialect coach provided). Bari-Tenor (C3 - F4).
[HARPER] – Character is female. 30s-40s. Any ethnicity. Strong-willed and protective with a philosopher’s heart, Frith’s elder cousin and guardian. Harper has never left her small fishing village and, like her younger cousin, has been left to fend for herself most of her life. She struggles with the role of being Frith’s “mother” without either of them ever having asked for that. Beneath it all lies a humanist grappling with life’s complexities. Essex/East Anglia accent (dialect coach provided). Alto (F2-D#3).
