Venus In Fur

by David Ives

Directed by Kristen Coury

Rehearsal Dates: September 17 - October 1

Run Dates: October 4 - 20, 2013 (Previews October 2 & 3)

David Ives’ new provocative comedy is sure to leave you breathless! Demanding playwright-director Thomas is searching for the perfect actress to bring his new vision to life. Enter Vanda, very late and seemingly clueless, she convinces Thomas to give her a shot to audition for him. What follows is an intelligent and hilarious show that explores the lines between fantasy and reality, seduction and power, love and sex and lust. Definitely not to be missed.

SEEKING:

Thomas- Mid to late 30s. Thomas is the writer and director of the play within the play, Venus In Fur. He is a “smartest man in the room” type, and has a very clear picture about how the character of Vanda should be played. He is at the end of a frustrating and disappointing day of auditions, and is initially dismissive of Vanda. But as the play unfolds, we see doubts begin to emerge in Thomas’s well defined world. While certainly a “theatrical”, Thomas must present a strong and masculine presence. The actor must be able to switch between styles and accents very quickly.

Vanda- Mid 20s to mid 30s. Vanda is a quirky, flighty, crude modern day actress, that very quickly reveals her talent and ability to inhabit the skin of the character she is auditioning for (also named Vanda). The play-within-a-play Vanda is graceful and regal, a woman of class. A tour de force role for an actress that demands comic chops, the ability to switch on a dime between styles and accents, and ultimately a power that can be awe inspiring and scary.

Something Intangible

by Bruce Graham

Directed by Cody Nickell

Rehearsal Dates: October 14 - 28, 2013

Run Dates: November 1 - 24, 2013 (Previews October 29 & 30)

Set among the glitz and glamour of 1940’s Hollywood, this lush new award-winning drama goes inside the movie studio and inside the lives of two brothers. One is the creative genius responsible for bringing the first animated feature film to the screen and the other is his loyal brother, who struggles to keep the money coming in to fund the next big dream, a feature-length animated film set to classical music that will ultimately change the film industry forever. With deft wit and endearing humanity, Something Intangible explores the ties that bind, artistic inspiration, and that intangible something that can elevate the mundane to the sublime.

SEEKING:

Dale Wiston- Early 40s - Dale is Tony’s older brother who runs the financial aspects of the movie studio. A pragmatist and salt of the earth type, Dale is not comfortable in the glamorous world around him. He has just started going to a psychiatrist to explore some of the deep seeded feelings hidden about his relationship with his brother. THIS ROLE IS CAST – SEEKING FUTURE REPLACEMENTS ONLY.

Tony Wiston- Late 30s- The creative genius behind the success of Wiston Studios. A bit on the manic side of things, Tony bounces from childish whimsy to ego trips very quickly. Athletic and charismatic, he is at home among the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. Tony wants to reinvent the world around him to reflect what he thinks it should look like. Actor must have a strong dynamic stage presence.

Sonia Feldman- Mid 50s A psychologist who is treating Dale, Dr. Feldman exudes warmth and understanding, though she can turn to stone when necessary. Very good at her job, and a great lover of films, though doesn’t fit in very well with the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. Must knit throughout the play.

Leo Baxter- 20s. A young and energetic animator at Wiston Studios. Leo is full of ideas that are sometimes met with disdain from Tony. Living a secret life because of his homosexuality, Leo has to make choices about what he is willing to put up with from Tony, in order to be a part of something amazing and unique.

Doc Bartelli/Gustav Von Meyerhoff- 60s. These roles are played by the same actor. Doc Bartelli is the moneyman that funds the Wiston brothers’ movies. He is an elegant older man who did well in banking and has had success backing Tony’s movies. Mostly dealing with Dale, Doc is pragmatic and every inch a businessman. A fan of what Tony creates, he is becoming less interested in being convinced that Tony’s crazy ideas are worth investing in. Von Meyerhoff is a world famous conductor and a larger than life presence. “Theatrical even when standing still.” Looking for an actor with range to play both parts. Comic chops a must, though Doc is certainly not played for laughs, and Von Meyerhoff, while a huge presence, is not a cartoon.

Ken Ludwig's The Game's Afoot

by Ken Ludwig

Director: TBD

Rehearsal Dates: January 30 - February 18, 2014

Run Dates: February 21 - March 16, 2014 (Previews February 19 & 20)

This new hilarious play from the master of comedy Ken Ludwig brings murder, mystery, mayhem and madcap adventure to our stage. Broadway superstar William Gillette, famous the world over for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, has invited fellow cast members to his opulent home for a dinner party. But when one of the guests winds up dead, Gillette will have to summon every ounce of Sherlock he can to solve the mystery. This play will keep you laughing and trying to figure out whodunit until the final bow.

SEEKING:

William Gillette- Late 30s to early 40s. A dynamic and charming stage actor (based on a real man). Has made a fortune from his stage adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, whom he also plays. Recently shot in the arm in a bizarre incident, Gillette is determined to bring his Sherlockian skills to bear on solving the case. Must have great comic chops. THIS ROLE IS CAST – SEEKING FUTURE REPLACEMENTS ONLY.

Felix Geisel- Early 40s. The company’s character actor, Felix is histrionic and arch. A true theatrical that has given his life to the stage, Felix is Gillette’s best friend and occasional sidekick. Married to Madge. Actor must have great comic chops and be physically strong.

Simon Bright- 25. The mangenue (look it up on urban dictionary) of the company, Simon is an enthusiastic young man, eager to please and find success. A bit of a naïf, Simon can occasionally be overly sensitive. Recently married to Aggie, they make a charming and wonderful couple.

Inspector Harriet Goring- 40s-50s. English and eccentric, Inspector Goring is completely one of a kind. By turns, witty and incisive, suddenly lost and dim, she is disarming in her inability to be defined. Always off the mark, and yet never far from the truth, somehow she always gets her man. Wonderful opportunity for a character actress; must have great comic chops.

Martha Gillette- 70s. Gillette’s dotty mother, elegant though a bit foggy, Martha never shies away from a fight. Always willing to lob a criticism when necessary, all the same, Martha is loyal to Gillette and his gang of theatrical misfits. Must have great comic chops.

Madge Geisel- Early 40s. Wry and outspoken (think Rosalind Russell), Madge, like her husband Felix, is a lifelong theatrical. Is game for anything, but back her into a corner and she will come out swinging. Must have great comic chops.

Aggie Wheeler- 25- Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, Aggie is the ingénue of the company. Good-natured and kind, Aggie has had tragedy in her past, though she seems to have dealt with it well, and even moved on. Recently married to Simon, they make a charming and wonderful couple. Actress needs to have a dark side.

Daria Chase- Mid 30s to Mid 40s. Glamorous and gorgeous, Daria is the theatre critic we all love to hate. Biting, bitchy, and utterly charming, you can’t help but like Daria, despite the terrible things she says and writes. A wonderful sense of humor goes a long way towards endearing Daria to the audience. The actress must have wonderful comic timing and be a skilled physical comedian.

All My Sons

by Arthur Miller

Directed by Kristen Coury

Rehearsal Dates: March 7 - 26, 2014

Run Dates: March 28 - April 19, 2014 (Preview March 27)

This electrifying American classic focuses on two families in the aftermath of World War II. In a quiet Ohio neighborhood, a marriage proposal unlocks secrets and threatens to shatter the American dream. Arthur Miller won the first Tony Award ever given to a playwright and cemented his status as one of America’s greatest writers.

SEEKING:

Joe Keller- Late 50s. A business man, though a self-made one, who still has the sense of the machine-shop worker about him. There is a hardness under the ease he presents to the world that shows the kind of man it would take to make the hard decisions that have gotten Joe where is today. A man among men, Joe is calm and dependable, a man who has seemingly made his peace with the tragedies that life has dealt him. Though as the play progresses, it becomes clear that the effort it takes to suppress these feelings is costing Joe a great deal. This is a role for an actor of great depth.

Kate Keller- Early 50s. “…a woman of uncontrolled inspirations, and an overwhelming capacity for love.” Kate is holding onto hope that her soldier son, who is missing and presumed dead, is still coming home. And the emotional strain of this is catching up with Kate. She wants desperately to return things to the way they were before the war dealt multiple blows to her family.

Chris Keller-32. Definitely Joe Keller’s son. Solidly built, a listener and capable of great loyalty, though he is chafing somewhat at the expectations of his parents. Chris is struggling to come out of the shadow of his dead younger brother, and struggling with the desire to please both his parents, while living a life he can be proud to call his own. He has a deep love and respect for Ann and hopes that she can be his path to a new future. The play’s romantic lead. We want to root for him.

Ann Deever- 26- Larry Keller’s former fiancée, she has come home to the old neighborhood to pursue a romance with Chris, Larry’s older brother. A beautiful young woman, gentle and earnest, Ann can hold her own with any character in the play. She is strong and has overcome the challenges that life has thrown her way with dignity.

George Deever- 32- A serious man, a war vet and lawyer, who until recently had cut off ties to his father in prison. Now, he is on the warpath to set things right and make sure that Joe Keller pays for the damage he did to the Deevers. Has no interest in seeing his sister get married to Chris, and is not shy about voicing the fact. An intense righteousness lives within this man.

Dr. Jim Bayliss- Late 30s. An easy-going man, neighbors with the Kellers, quick to make jokes about his lot in life, but perhaps there is a sad truth to those jokes. An intuitive and smart man, he tries very hard to see that everyone is taken care of.

Sue Bayliss- Late 30s. Jim’s wife, she is cynical and pragmatic, and wants her husband to keep the money coming in and not get caught up in idealistic fantasies.

Frank Lubey- 32- “A pleasant, opinionated man, uncertain of himself, with a tendency towards peevishness when crossed, but always wanting it pleasant and neighborly.” Balding. Married to Lydia. Grew up with Chris, George, Lydia and Ann in the neighborhood.

Lydia Lubey- 27- Married to Frank, mother of three. Laughs easily, and other than her children, doesn’t have a care in the world. Used to have a thing with Ann’s brother George.

Bert- 8 to 10 Playful neighborhood kid. THIS ROLE WILL BE CAST LOCALLY/WE ARE NOT SEEKING OPTIONS IN NY.
