Seeking:

Sadie:

Female, African-American; Character ages from 17-79 during the course of the play; a proud, warm, intelligent, hardworking woman. Very grounded but full of life.

Nella:

Female, African-American; Character ages from 17-81 during the course of the play; Sadie’s older sister; a feisty woman who never quite fits into the rural Southern domestic life of her family. Spirited and quick-witted.

Alice/Asia:

Female; African-American 35+. Alice is Sadie’s and Nella’s mother; hardworking and pragmatic. Asia is the 45 year daughter of Sadie. She has inherited her mother’s strength.

Macon:

Male, African-American, Character ages from 24-52 during the course of the play; a manly man of strength and prowess; has considerable charm but is also closed-minded and unable to adjust to a changing world.
