TRACK 1: The Officer and others
Officer Marcus Moscowicz: An ambitious young police officer who wants to be a detective. The main character trying to solve a murder. Doubles as The Chief: Marcus's boss. Vanessa: Marcus's former partner and love interest. Strong comedic timing, singing, and piano skills required. (Male presenting, any race/ethnicity)

TRACK 2: The Suspects
A variety of characters, often changing between them with minimal costume or prop changes. Dahlia Whitney: The victim's loopy widow. Murray and Barb Flandon: A bickering elderly couple who were neighbors. Steph Whitney: An eager graduate student. Barrette Lewis: A self-incriminating prima ballerina. Dr. Griff: A friendly local psychiatrist. Timmy, Yonkers, and Skid: Members of an old-fashioned boys' choir. Henry Vivaldi: A late-arriving character. Tracy Turnblad: Confident, talented, and incredibly determined. A romantic with a good heart and desire to cut up the dance floor. Always on top of the latest trends. (Female presenting, late teens–early twenties).

Corny Collins: The charismatic host of the Corny Collins' Show. Good looking and smooth talking, genuinely nice on and off camera. (Male presenting, 25–35).

Edna Turnblad: Tracy's big and blonde mother. A working housewife who has lost her confidence and dreams to be a plus-size clothing designer. Boisterous and commanding. Often played by a male in drag. (Age 30–50). Strong comedic singer.

Penny Pingleton: Tracy's best friend and dorky sidekick. Not the brightest girl, but has good intentions. Bursting to get free of her mother's dominating control, she falls for Seaweed with childlike curiosity. (Female presenting, age 15–20).

Velma Von Tussle: Amber's mother and the director of Corny Collins' show. Devious taskmaster and snobby racist. Former Miss Baltimore Crabs. (Female presenting, age 45–55). Strong comedic timing and singer.

Amber Von Tussle: Link's girlfriend and Tracy's nemesis. Pretty, thin, shallow, snobby, and racist. Can't dance but expected to win Miss Baltimore Hairspray. (Female presenting, age 15–20).

Link Larkin: The star heartthrob on Corny Collins' show. Extremely attractive and talented; falls for Tracy. (Male presenting, age 15–20).

Seaweed J. Stubbs: Tracy's classmate and friend, discriminated against due to his skin color. Cocky but lovable. Talented in song and dance. Falls for Penny. (Male presenting, African American, age 15–20).

Little Inez: Seaweed's little sister. (Female presenting, African American).

Motormouth Maybelle: Seaweed and Little Inez's mother; also appears as the Guest DJ on the Corny Collins Negro Day show. Big, proud, sassy, confident. (Female presenting, African American, age 40–50). Strong singer.

Wilbur Turnblad: Tracy's kind father. Owns a joke shop and supports his daughter. (Male presenting, age 55–65).

Prudy Pingleton: Penny's strict mother. Very conservative and controlling. (Female presenting, age 40–50).

Elvis Presley: The first and still undisputed king of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Magnetic, charming, playful. Must evoke Elvis’s iconic sound, movement, and swagger without impersonation. (Male presenting, early 20s). Strong vocals and acoustic guitar skills.

Jerry Lee Lewis: Rock ‘n’ Roll's legendary piano prodigy. Explosive, cocky, electrifying. Requires exceptional piano skills and stamina. (Male presenting, early to mid 20s).

Carl Perkins: Lead guitar player, thoughtful and sincere songwriter. Strong rockabilly guitarist and vocalist. (Male presenting, mid 20s).

Johnny Cash: Guitar player, charismatic and introspective. Strong rhythmic guitar player with commanding stage presence. (Male presenting, age 20–30).

Sam Phillips: Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll and founder of Sun Records; towering and charismatic. (Male presenting, 30–35). Singing required but limited.

Dyanne: An aspiring singer and Elvis’s girlfriend. Confident, sultry. Strong rockabilly/blues vocalist. (Female presenting, mid 20s).

Brother Jay: Strong bass player, brother of Carl Perkins. (Male presenting, mid 20s).

Fluke: Strong drummer. (Male presenting, mid 20s).

Claude: The gregarious and well-liked Mayor of Gander, Newfoundland. (Male presenting, any race/ethnicity, age 40–60s).

Bonnie: A no-nonsense SPCA worker in Gander who becomes a fierce caretaker for stranded animals. Direct, warm, and deeply compassionate. (Female presenting, any race/ethnicity, age 35–45).

Beulah: Head of the Gander Legion with a firefighter son. (Female presenting, any race/ethnicity, age 40–60s).

Oz: The gruff, practical police constable in Gander. (Male presenting, any race/ethnicity, age 30s–50s).

Doug: An air traffic controller, married to Bonnie. (Male presenting, any race/ethnicity, 35–45).

Janice: An eager new local TV reporter thrown into the deep end on her first day. (Female presenting, any race/ethnicity, age 20s).

Annette: A local teacher at the Gander Academy and mother to many children. (Female presenting, any race/ethnicity, age 40s–60s).

Garth: Head of the local union representing the Bus Drivers. (Male presenting, any race/ethnicity, age 30–50s).

Kevin T.: Head of an environmental energy company in L.A., inspired by Gander's generosity. (Male presenting, any race/ethnicity, age 30–50s).

Kevin J.: Kevin’s boyfriend and secretary. Sarcastic and unhappy. (Male presenting, any race/ethnicity, age 30s–40s).

Diane: A recently divorced woman from Texas traveling home after her mother’s death. Guarded, sharp-witted. (Female presenting, any race/ethnicity, age 50s).

Nick: An English oil engineer living and working in Texas. Optimistic and empathetic. (Male presenting, any race/ethnicity, age 50s).

Hannah: A mother traveling to see her firefighter son. Quiet, strong, emotionally reserved. (Female presenting, any race/ethnicity, age 40–60s).

Bob: A hardened New Yorker, suspicious and jaded, who softens through his experience in Gander. (Male presenting, any race/ethnicity, age 40–60s).
