OTHELLO
by William Shakespeare, Directed by Robert Richmond
Rehearsals 9/20/11 - 10/16/11, Performances 10/18/11 – 12/4/11.
Cassio:
Male, 21-26. Proud, charming, but naïve officer. Needs emotional depth, stage combat experience, and ability to play binge-drinking scene convincingly.
Brabantio:
Male, mid 40s-60. High-status Senator. Although irrational, needs to be sympathetic. Requires emotional depth and despair of King Lear.
Bianca:
Female, 30-40. Dark, exotic, with sultry sexuality and life experience. Belly-dancing experience a plus.
Lodovico/Lord in Venice/Venetian Solder:
Male, 35-65. Able to play contrasting characters: ineffectual elder statesman, high status politician, soldier who drinks and likes to have a good time.
Duke of Venice/Gratiano/Venetian Soldier:
Male, 35-55. Able to play contrasting characters: Leading statesman, middle ranking staffer, soldier who drinks and likes to have a good time.
Montano:
Male, 30-40.Well-liked and respected soldier with considerable fighting prowess. Stage combat necessary.
The following roles have been CAST:
Iago*:
CAST. Male 40-45, a consummate actor who engages with audience to convince us he's justified in destroying Othello; smiling and charming, enjoying subterfuge and malicious violence. Actor must be skilled in stage combat.
Othello*:
CAST. Male, 35-45. handsome, dignified, calm Moor. Requires actor to speak with rare distinction, hand-to-hand stage combat experience, and psychological/emotional depth.
Desdemona*:
CAST. Female, 20-25. Bright and determined, follows her heart. Requires ability to play both sophistication and naivety, and evoke sympathy, sexuality, and dignity.
Emelia*:
CAST. Female, 30-40. Optimistic in the face of an abusive marriage. Needs the ability to smile and deceive everyone, including herself.
Roderigo*:
CAST. Male, 30-40. High-status gentleman, prideful, lustful, racist, ultimately idiotic, but requiring an empathetic downfall. Needs ability to disguise himself vocally and physically.

Lord Worthy:
Male, 45-50, stolid, all heart, but bumbling, loves Lady Reveller but hates gaming
Lady Lucy:
Female, 30-45, virtuous, religious, sober
Mrs. Sago:
Female, 30-40 member of the lower-class, obsessed with gaming and with mixing with her betters
Mr. Sago:
Male, 35-45, druggist, doting husband, physically round and pudgy
Sir Richard Plainman:
Male, 50-65, cantankerous father of Valeria.
Valeria:
Female, 20-25, educated and strong young woman, passion for philosophy and science
Captain Hearty:
Male, 35-45, naval officer, member of the lower class, straightforward, emotional, larger than life, funny
Ensign Lovely:
Male, 25-35, soldier, Valeria's loyal suitor, must be able to change appearance physically and vocally
Buckle:
Male, 25-55, Lord Worthy's long-suffering servant, funny, full of vim and vigor
Alpiew:
Female, 40-50, Lady Reveller's pert servant

All actors need to be comfortable with physical comedy; as many as possible should play some kind of instrument and several need to play guitar moderately to very well.
Baptista:
Male or Female, late 50s or 60s. A tough, wily, good-natured but hard-edged old fellow or lady. Not to be messed with. Mercenary. Not an easy person to have as a mother or father.
Lucentio:
Male, late 20s-late 30s. He is a passionate, poetic, sweet, energetic, versatile and funny
Gremio:
Male, 60s. Sweet, doting, clueless, mischievous old cuss. A sizeable ego
Hortensio:
Male, 30s. A great guy. Must play the guitar well. Likeable, smart, funny and sweet.
Grumio:
Male or female, 20s-40s. Funny as hell, smart, flexible, physically adept actor.
Vincentio:
Male, late 50s to early 70s. Smart. Funny. Full of vim & vigor (and vinegar).
A Pedant:
Male, late 50s to early 70s. Smart. Funny, Full of vim & vigor.
Biondello:
Male or female. Not too bright. Very funny. Quite likeable
Widow:
Female. 30s. Not the sharpest nor the kindest not the prettiest gal in town. Funny, though
Curtis:
A servant. Slow, sweet, well meaning, not terribly capable. Plays guitar.
The Balladeer:
Our storyteller for the evening. A sad singer of songs.

Male, 30s. Poetic, passionate, brash, brave, fierce, good looking, and funny. A force of nature.
Katharina*:
Female, 30s. Fierce. Beautiful. Passionate. Way angry. Damaged. A force of nature.
Bianca*:
Female, 20s or early 30s. Lovely, smart, maybe a bit of a vixen. Duplicitous. Also damaged
Tranio*:
Male or female, 20s-40s. An impeccable servant. Smart as a whip, perceptive, playful, reckless and radical. If a woman, she needs to be able to play a man convincingly. Physically adept.
