Spinner is a thrilling new play based on a true event from 1970, written by Hall of Fame sportswriter and radio legend Ray Didinger. Didinger shares the true story of NHL player, Brian “Spinner” Spencer, while simultaneously providing a reflection of the risks, rewards, and regrets we all face when chasing something bigger than ourselves. It’s a powerful tale of sacrifice, family, and the lengths we’ll go to make our dreams a reality… even when the cost is too high.
ROY SPENCER: CAST. (Male, 40s–50s) Brian’s father. A hard-edged, intense man shaped by a rugged life as a logger. Fiercely determined, emotionally volatile, and singularly focused on Brian’s hockey future. Capable of tenderness but often ruled by frustration and unmet dreams.
BRIAN SPENCER: (Male, early 20s) Will double as twin brother, Byron. A tough, passionate young hockey player from rural British Columbia. Gritty and hardworking, with a boyish charm and deep desire to make his father proud. Lives and breathes hockey but a darkness creeps over him after his Father's death.
BYRON SPENCER: (20s) Will double as twin brother, Brian. Brian’s twin brother, Byron is thoughtful, self-aware, and grounded. Once a promising hockey player like his brother, Byron chose a different path — one that prioritizes balance, family, and emotional well-being over ambition and approval.
IRENE SPENCER: CAST. (Female, 40s–50s) Brian’s mother. Grounded, intelligent, and emotionally worn from years of deferring to Roy’s ambitions. A quiet but firm voice of reason and concern, protective of both of her son’s well-being and future.
JIM GORDON: (Male, 50s–60s) Veteran sportswriter for the Toronto Star, a thoughtful and gruff observer. Wry, compassionate, and grounded in his love for the game and its human stories.
HARRY: CAST. (Male, 40s–50s) Another hockey Dad and Roy's friend. Easygoing and rational, he contrasts Roy’s intensity with a more balanced, relaxed outlook on parenting and the game.
CAROL: CAST. (Female, 30s–40s) A receptionist at CKPG-TV. Professional and composed under pressure, but increasingly anxious during the escalating scene with Roy. Represents the ordinary person caught in extraordinary circumstances.
STU: CAST. (Male, 30s–40s) The station engineer. Logical, no-nonsense, and a bit sarcastic. Handles Roy’s demands with growing alarm, trying to de-escalate a dangerous situation he doesn’t fully understand at first.

A new, original musical based on a true story. Glory Ride is the untold tale of an Italian Tour de France winner who uses his fame and his bicycle to save hundreds of children from Mussolini’s Fascists during WW2.
GINO BARTALI. Early 30s. Tour de France cycling champ, haunted by causing his little brother’s death. Although he has conquered his athletic foes, he must fight his internal demons and reluctantly joins the Resistance against the Fascists. Gino’s soaring songs celebrate the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat in love and politics. Cycling skills are not required but is naturally fit and athletic. Vocal range: strong bari-tenor.
ADRIANA BANI. Early 30s. She’s clever, attractive, and determined to fight the fascists in her own way. Gino is entranced by her, though they disagree about how to approach life. Vocal range: alto with an edge.
CARDINAL DALLA COSTA. 50s-70s. The Cardinal of Tuscany is a rebel in red robes. In his ballad “800 Souls” he wrestles with himself: Should I obey the Pope or Mussolini, or my own conscience? He’s secretly joined the Resistance but worries that his courageous acts will endanger the families that depend on him. Vocal range: baritone.
GIORGIO NICO. 30s. A timid but lovable accountant who masterminds an ingenious plan to smuggle children to freedom. Great comic timing. Like Leo Bloom in The Producers, Nico is an inadvertently amusing introvert. Good-looking but does not realize it. Vocal range: baritone, but with a tenor timbre.
MAJOR MARIO ESPOSITO. 30s. A powerful, complex role – Blackshirt leader and Gino’s former best friend. Like Javert in Les Mis, Carita tracks Gino’s moves and cracks down on freedom. Carita is a proud Italian nationalist. He’s convinced that he is doing the right thing – after all, by imposing his brand of fascism, he’s pacifying the Germans and keeping away the even more brutal Nazis. Vocal range: commanding baritone.
IL LUPO. Cool, rebellious, Il Lupo is the head Partisan. He will go to any length to fight for freedom. Nothing to lose. Nothing to fear. He challenges each of our Resistance heroes—how far will you go for what you believe? How will you fight tyranny? Likely to understudy Gino.
GIULIO BARTALI/COSMO. 18+ to play ages 10 to 14. Alto range.
LORENZO. Cosmo’s younger brother. 18+ to play ages 10 to 14. Alto range.
FELIX (20s) A sensitive violinist forced to wear a soldier’s uniform and carry a gun, Felix does not belong on a battlefield. He helps Gino and sings a beautiful song - A Minor Thing, a War, lamenting his lost life. Vocal range: Tenor
COMMANDER GRAZIANI (40s-60s), Major Carita’s superior. Baritone
FANTALI (20s-40s), Carita’s henchman. Baritone/COPPI (20s), Gino’s cycling rival. Bari-tenor
TOWNSPEOPLE - Looking for male and female actors to play 20s to 50s with a mix of vocal ranges to play Townspeople and multiple roles.

Set against the stirring soundscape of sea shanties, The Chequerboard Watch explores what happens when flawed men try to uphold a fragile ideal of brotherhood in a world designed to divide them. On land, race, class, and patriarchy reign. But at sea there is a chance to be equals. The threat isn’t just the storm outside. It’s the storm of fear, control, and legacy that lives in the hearts of the men aboard.
BILLY, Mid-late 40s, White, man. Irish, a lifelong sailor and renowned legend in the sailing community. High emotional IQ, eccentric, wise, with a romanticized view on life. Embodies a Santa like quality, dedicated to preserving the magic of life at sea, but has trouble facing harsh truths about prioritizing others over himself as he faces the end of his life. Baritone.
CAPTAIN EDWARDS, Mid-30s, White, man. British, a driven and perfectionist captain from an upper-class naval family. Charismatic and capable, he is haunted by his father’s high expectations and his own insecurities. As the pressures of the voyage and his obsession with success mount, he begins to unravel, becoming increasingly ruthless and mirroring the harsh methods of his former superior. Baritone.
MR. KIT, Mid to late 20s, Any Ethnicity, woman. Strong, spunky, first mate disguised as a man, a truth only few know but don't discuss. Seen as the Captain's right hand, she is fair, and everyone looks to her for guidance, especially as the Captain spirals. Mezzo/Belt. Will double as FRENCH WOMAN.
ANSEL, Early 20s, Black, man. Jamaican, loves being a sailor and part of the crew. Speaks a blend of Jamaican patois and English. Queer, a happy-go-lucky free spirit with a wise Jamaican proverb always in his back pocket. Mischievous and provocative when he’s ready. Puts up a confident front but internally struggles with his role in society. Tenor
GIUSEPPE, CAST. Early 30s, Italian, man. The ship's highly superstitious and anxious cook, speaking broken English with excellent comic timing. Beneath his nervous exterior lies a fiery spirit, ready to be a powerful advocate and voice speaking truth to power when the moment calls for it. Tenor.
MR. FRANCIS, 40s, Black, man. Igbo, born in Britain to an Igbo mother who was a former slave. He serves as second mate. Amicable but guarded, he’s mindful of racial issues and calls out discrimination when necessary. Devoted to returning to Igbo land after losing his mother, he scoffs at the young, hopeful energy aboard. Baritone.
MR. ENOCH, Late 20s, Black, man. Brazilian, former slave. Tall, brawny, a gentle giant. Carpenter on board who is a selective mute due to the abuse he experienced as a lad on Captain Woodard’s ship. He is sensitive and has a strong emotional IQ that often goes unnoticed. Baritone.
JAMES, Mid-Late 20s, White, man. Irish, red-haired stowaway. Found in Act 2, he lost his wife and daughter in the famine. A lost soul, timid and shy but hard working, he is grieving but ultimately seeking hope and a new start. Tenor. Will double as BARTENDER TOM.
SOLOMON, Mid-30s, Black, man. Born into slavery in South Carolina and freed by Captain Edwards, Solomon is a seasoned sailor, storyteller, and spiritual guide. He draws on his Congolese heritage to inspire the crew with humour and wisdom. Baritone.
PHILIP, Late 20s, White, man. British, high-born, newly joined the ship after his father discovered his queer tendencies. With a strict upbringing, he tends to mask his authentic identity and is very green, struggling to adjust to seafaring life. Tenor.
BOSUN, 20s, White, man. British, boatswain responsible for overseeing the crew, deck duties, and inventory, relaying orders from the first mate and captain. Ambitious, with a chip on his shoulder, he desires to rise through the ranks. He can be amicable but can also be a bully at times. Tenor.
