• EDDIE: Friends with Paul since elementary school, Eddie created most of the group’s vocal arrangements and served as wardrobe manager. Outspoken. Loved cornbread so much, they nicknamed him “Corn.” This character is Black. Gender: Male | Character Age: 30s – 40s | Vocal Range Top: G5
• PAUL: No relation to Otis, Paul was one of the Founding Members of The Temptations and the group’s resident choreographer. Well-liked and kind, but unable to cope with his own demons. This character is Black. Gender: Male | Character Age: 20s – 30s | Vocal Range Top: C5
• MELVIN: Loved his mama. The bass of the group and one of the first members Otis recruited. Nicknamed “Blue” because of his fondness for the color, Melvin was incredibly loyal to the group and, particularly, Otis. This character is Black. • DAVID: Lead singer of The Temptations. After Al, helped take the group to the top of the charts. As electric on stage as “Lightning In A Bottle.” Maybe the most charismatic front man in pop music history. This character is Black. Gender: Male | Character Age: 20s – 30s | Vocal Range Top: D5
• BERRY GORDY: The Chairman! The founder of Motown and a man who needs no introduction. Strong Mover. This character is Black. Gender: Male | Character Age: 20s – 30s
• SHELLY BERGER: Not your typical Motown manager. Character man; His quick wit and level head helps The Temptations achieve their success. This character is Caucasian. Gender: Male | Character Age: 20s – 30s
• JOSEPHINE: Otis’ teenage wife who grows up fast. She takes care of their son while he’s on the road. This character is Black. Gender: Female | Character Age: 20s | Vocal Range Top: E5
• DENNIS EDWARDS: Lead singer of The Temptations after David Ruffin. A vocal powerhouse with the ego to match. This character is Black. Gender: Male | Character Age: 20s – 30s | Vocal Range Top: F5

• EVAN HANSEN: Smart, sincere, and excruciatingly self-conscious, Evan prefers to hover in the background, a supporting player in his own life, too afraid to step forward into the spotlight and risk ridicule or, what might be worse, no one noticing him at all. • ZOË MURPHY: Sensitive and sophisticated, with a sharp sense of humor, Zoë could care less about the status games and popularity rites of high school. She feels a terrible ambivalence over her brother’s death. Gender: Female | Character Age: 18 – 30 | Vocal Range: F3 – E5
• CONNOR MURPHY: An angry, disaffected loner, Connor has been a troubled kid for as long as anyone can remember, an enigma and a source of endless consternation to his long-suffering parents. Gender: Male | Character Age: 18 – 30 | Vocal Range: F3 – G#4
• CYNTHIA MURPHY: Connor and Zoë’s mother. To Evan, she seems to be the perfect mother, nurturing, available, and willing to talk about anything. To her own children, it’s a bit more complicated. Gender: Female | Character Age: 40s | Vocal Range: F3 – E5
• LARRY MURPHY: Connor and Zoë’s father. Though often tense and taciturn, Larry shows a different face to the world, representing for Evan the dad he always wished for: strong, confident, and more than anything, reliable, someone to be counted on. • JARED KLEINMAN: Droll and sarcastic, Jared covers his own insecurities with a well-practiced swagger and a know-it-all arrogance. Gender: Male | Character Age: 18 – 28 | Vocal Range: D3 – B4
• ALANA BECK: Earnest to a fault, prone to melodrama, Alana hides a deeper loneliness beneath an ever-present smile and an almost aggressive friendliness. Gender: Female | Character Age: 18 – 28 | Vocal Range: F3 – E5

SEEKING:

• CAROLE KING: An aspiring singer/songwriter going from schoolgirl to superstar. An unassuming, appealing, funny and vulnerable girl from a Jewish family in Brooklyn. A powerful, distinctive voice that can replicate Carole King’s. Gender: Female | Character Age: 18 – Late 20s | Vocal Range: G3 – E5. NOTE: Needs to convincingly act as if she is playing the piano, making piano skills necessary.
• GERRY GOFFIN: Carole’s boyfriend, songwriting partner and eventual husband. Magnetic personality, appealing, passionate, ambitious and sympathetic. Portrays a wide range of emotions and is a strong singer. Gender: Male | Character Age: 20s – 30s | Vocal Range: B2 – B4
• CYNTHIA WEIL: Carole’s best friend and fellow songwriter. She is sophisticated, smart, chic, likable, with a quick wit and comic timing. She and Barry Mann form the other half of the famous songwriting duo who are both rivals and friends to Carole and Gerry. Gender: Female | Character Age: 20s – 30s | Vocal Range: E3 – E5
• BARRY MANN: Cynthia’s songwriting partner (and eventual husband). He is good natured, appealing, endearing and a hypochondriac. Comedic, with a strong voice. Gender: Male | Character Age: 20s – 30s | Vocal Range: C3 – A4
• DONNY KIRSHNER: An influential music publisher and producer. Smart, authoritative, and a mentor to the young songwriters. Mostly speaking role; occasionally joins ensemble. Gender: Male | Character Age: 40s – 50s | Vocal Range: A2 – C4
• GENIE KLEIN: Carole’s strong-willed, practical, Jewish mother. A realist who’s both protective and proud of her daughter. Provides humor and grounded wisdom. Mostly speaking role; occasionally joins ensemble. Gender: Female | Character Age: 50s – 60s | Vocal Range: G3 – C5
