BREAKDOWN

CROOKED CROSS

SYNOPSIS: The story of the Kluger family, a typical middle class Bavarian family, facing the economic and political challenges of life in Germany in the 1930s — specifically the 18 months between Christmas 1932 and June 1934. The heart of the play is a love story – Lexa Kluger is engaged to Moritz Weissmann, a Jewish doctor. Lexa’s brothers, Helmy and Erich, are becoming increasingly involved with the Nazi party, grateful to have “a real job with a little pay at least.” CROOKED CROSS is Sally Carson’s dramatization of her novel of the same name. The novel was published in 1934 and is being reissued April 2025, in England by Persephone Press (not available in U.S.). The play premiered in Birmingham (U.K.) in 1935 and was produced in London in 1937. The Times commended the young author: “She never preaches, or loses touch, through hate or prejudice, with the human beings she represents.”

SEEKING:

LEXA: Female, 22. Lexa may appear a little naïve, but she has great reserves of confidence and command mixed in with her strong sense of humour and deep emotional access. Self-aware and compelling. Plus, she likes to dance and have fun. Piano a plus.

HELMY: Male, 23. Helmy, the eldest Kluger child, but maybe the most innocent. He blushes easily. He is sincere, sensitive, and sweet, but grows tougher over the course of the play, as he commits to his responsibilities and turns away from the family.

ERICH: Male, 20. Erich is blessed with charm, beauty, and an infectious smile. He also has a surprising dark side, filled with bitterness and malice.

KLUGER: Male, 45-ish. The patriarch, a good sense of humor with a twinkle in his eye, going a little soft now, unlike his days of serving in the Great War, 20 years earlier.

FRAU KLUGER: Female, 45-ish. A quiet, seemingly simple domestic woman, concerned only with the happiness of her children and husband. She wants to do the right thing if it will make her children happy.

MORITZ WEISSMANN: Late 20s. Moritz is intelligent, sensitive, well-liked, humorous, humble, handsome. The author describes him as “not Jewish looking” and another character says he’s the “most eligible poor bachelor in Munich.”

PROFESSOR WEISMANN: 60-70. A distinguished-looking man, elegant under trying circumstances. His wife died in the last year, and there’s a certain resigned air of sadness about him.

OTTO: Male, early 20s. Otto is shy, well-meaning, and infatuated with Lexa. The author tells us he’s: “easily tongue-tied and out of breath” while “it is important that he is not made to appear ridiculous.”

STORM TROOPER, ETC.: Male, 20s. Doubles as multiple parts, including a young Storm Trooper who has one strong dramatic scene.
