SYNOPSIS: A new pop-rock, coming of age, musical comedy, Mythic makes its U.S. premiere in Cincinnati. The ancient Greek myth of Persephone is turned on its ear, with the gods as chart-topping pop stars, power-hungry politicians, and attention-seeking influencers. Starstruck by Olympian celebrity, Persephone rebels against her mother Demeter and sneaks into a party at the Acropolis. When she meets brooding bad boy Hades, her life takes an unexpected turn into the Underworld. Mythic is directed and choregraphed by three-time Tony Award-winner Kathleen Marshall.
Understudy or Swing assignments are pending. Non-internal understudies or swings roles will be cast from local Cincinnati-area actors.
PERSEPHONE (Female Presenting, 18 - early 20s, Open Ethnicity) The sheltered, earthbound daughter of Demeter. Persephone longs for independence and to find her own place among the world of the gods. She’s strong-willed, feisty, funny, smart, and empathetic — but she’s also a teenager who doesn’t quite know who she is yet. Her vocals and her style/vibe are based on indie folk/pop stars like Sara Bareilles and Olivia Rodrigo. Mezzo with belt (indie pop rock style).
DEMETER (Female Presenting, 40s – 50s, Open Ethnicity) Goddess of the Harvest, mother of Persephone. Demeter spends her days far away from the other Olympian gods, planting crops and caring for mortals. Beneath her earthy-crunchy exterior lies a strength and resolve that is unmatched. Her vocals and her style/vibe are based off of old-school folk rock stars like Carole King and Carly Simon. As she grows in power, it becomes more like Adele. Mezzo with belt (pop rock style).
APHRODITE (Female Presenting, 20s, Open Ethnicity) Goddess of Love. A party girl with serious daddy issues. She's like an ancient Greek Kardashian. She lives for the red carpet but has to settle for always coming in second to her sister Athena. Aphrodite starts off vapid and self-involved, but discovers she is much more than she’s been raised to be. She matures and ends up becoming a strong force for good. Has excellent comic chops and a contemporary pop sound. Her vocals and her style/vibe are based off of many of our contemporary Pop queens and princesses, like Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and Ariana Grande. Mezzo with belt (pop rock style).
HADES (Male Presenting, 20s, Open Ethnicity) God of the Dead. He postures as the brooding bad boy from hell, but truthfully, he has a big heart and is longing for acceptance. In the beginning, he is convinced he’s incapable of change. With Persephone’s help, we see him grow from a self-loathing, awkward, emo rocker to a more confident and kind king of the Underworld. His vocals and his style/vibe are based off of Billy Joe Armstrong from Green Day, as well as Bruno Mars, and John Legend. Tenor (pop rock style).
ZEUS (Male Presenting, 40s – 50s, Open Ethnicity) King of the Gods. An aging celebrity and narcissist; a terrible father and a slick politician desperately trying to hold on to his throne. A guy you love to hate. His vocals and his style/vibe is based off of O.G. rockers like Billy Joel and Elton John. Baritone or Tenor (pop rock style).
ENSEMBLE: Strong Singer/Dancer/Actors to be in the Ensemble and Play the Following Featured Roles Greek Chorus (8 Chorus Members):
BARBARA (Female Presenting, 20s – 40s, Open Ethnicity) Member of the Greek Chorus. A nymph and confidante to Demeter.
ALECTO (Any Gender, 20s-40s, Open Ethnicity) Member of the Greek Chorus. Hades’ number two. Authoritative and cynical. Their job is to keep Hades on track and the Underworld running smoothly.
JANELLE (Female Presenting, 20s – 40s, Open Ethnicity) Member of the Greek Chorus. An underworld Henchman. Really loves torture.
HELIOS (Male Presenting, 20s – 40s, Open Ethnicity) Member of the Greek Chorus. Sun God. A total frat-boy “bro.”
CYCLOPS (Any Gender, 20s – 40s, Open Ethnicity) Member of the Greek Chorus. A cyclops.
CHARON (Male Presenting, 20s – 40s, Open Ethnicity) Member of the Greek Chorus. Hell’s ferryman. Starts off curmudgeonly, ends up seeing things in an enthusiastic new light.
ASCALAPHUS (Male Presenting, 20s – 40s, Open Ethnicity) Member of the Greek Chorus. Gardener of the Underworld. Neurotic and strange until shown a new way of living.
MINOS (Male Presenting, 20s – 40s, Open Ethnicity) Member of the Greek Chorus. Judge of the Dead. A severe evil gatekeeper on the surface - but actually a sweet teddy bear underneath.
NIKE (Any Gender, 20s – 40s, Open Ethnicity) Member of the Greek Chorus. A customer service representative at the gates of Mount Olympus. Totally over it.
APHRODETTES (Female Presenting, 20s – 40s, Open Ethnicity) Members of the Greek Chorus. Aphrodite’s entourage/back-up girls. Think Destiny’s Child.
