COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER

Note: All characters sing in an authentic country/folk sound which includes falsetto for men and strong mixing and vocal flips (yodeling style) for women. The approach should feel natural, easy and from the gut. Ability to play one or more of the following instruments a plus: Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keyboard, Fiddle, Mandolin, Percussion, Pedal Steel Guitar, Dobro, Lap Steel, Slide Guitar, Banjo, Harmonica, etc.

SEEKING:

[Patsy] Character is female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), Caucasian, 20s–30s. Confident, sexy, and wise, Patsy survived a tough upbringing in Virginia to be a great country singer and a mother/big sister figure to Loretta. Earthy, sensual sound – range F3 to D5.

[Charlie Dick] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), Caucasian, 30s–40s. Patsy’s husband. Smooth talking and hard-drinking, Charlie enjoys a good time and a dry joke. Country sound – range A2 to A5.

ALREADY CAST:

[Loretta Lynn] Character is female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), Caucasian, 30s–40s. Country singer and “coal miner’s daughter” from Butcher Holler, Kentucky. A truth-telling, charismatic performer torn between life on the road and her family at home, trying to hold it all together. Authentic country sound, range F3 to C5.

[Oliver “Doolittle” Lynn] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), Caucasian, 40s. Loretta’s husband and business partner. Reticent, shy of the spotlight, but a force in the marriage and Loretta’s career. Also, an alcoholic with demons to battle. Country sound with strong top register – range A2 to A5.

[Clara Webb] Character is female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), Caucasian or mixed-race Caucasian/Native American, 40s–50s. Loretta’s mother; a housewife. Plainspoken, strong, and enduring. Multiple roles. Mature folk/country sound – range A3 to E5.

[Ted Webb] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), Caucasian, 40s/50s. Loretta’s father; a coal miner. A gentle and kind man who has worked himself to the bone. Multiple roles. Lyrical country sound – Range A2 to A5.

[Wyatt] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), Caucasian, 30s–50s. Charming and smooth. An emcee/host as well as a musician in his own right, Wyatt is a central (fictional) figure in the Nashville music scene in the ‘70s. Country sound – range A2 to A5, with falsetto feature.

[Martha Jean/Virginia] Character is female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), Caucasian, 20s. An ingenue with reserves of strength. Think June Carter meets Emmy Lou Harris. Bright, youthful country sound, range A3 to E5.

[Earl, Reporter, and other roles] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), Caucasian, 30s. Various roles including a vaudeville-style comedy performer, and a self-important journalist. Country sound – range G2 to A5.
