Actors should be extremely proficient in playing both the vulnerable dramatic aspects of the play as well as the comic nature of Neil Simon. Traditional Brooklyn Accents a plus.
Stanley Jerome:
Male, 28. Young, exuberant and ready to conquer the world. Stanley most likely takes after his father, Jack, more than he realizes. He is at that wonderful stage of life when he sees the opportunities that lie at his feet and he can’t wait to seize the day. He may get ahead of himself at times, but he has the wisdom to know that you have to be in the game to win it. He is the driving force for the Jerome family, but especially for his younger brother, Eugene. Optimistic and determined. Role was originated by Jason Alexander.
Kate Jerome:
Female, 50s. Mother of Stanley and Eugene. The heart of the family. Very stereotypical 1940’s housewife, so she needs a strong actress that can delicately craft her dramatic arch. (Anne Bancroft played Kate in the television movie, Linda Lavin on Broadway). She is going through a very painful event, but she is not a person that feels sorry for herself. She is a firecracker and at one time was one of the best dancers in Brooklyn. She is independent and does not doubt who she is and what she is worth. Takes after her father, Ben.
Jack Jerome:
Male, 50s. Father of Stanley and Eugene. Jack has been the sole provider for his family. He has done his duty, and served his family to the best of his ability. We find Jack at a time in his life that may be considered a Mid-life crisis. He was a dreamer in his youth, most likely with the drive of Stanley, without Stanley’s charisma and people skills. He is caught between two worlds; the one he wishes for and the one he has. The actor will need to have a quiet simplicity in relation to Jack. He is a quiet person, and does not ‘Rage against the Dying of the light’.
Ben Epstein:
Male, 70s. Grandfather to Stanley and Eugene. Ben is Kate’s father and an old world Socialist. An elderly Jewish man with Trotsky leanings who provides the play with most of its warmth and humor. He reminds us where Kate and Jack come from, and how perhaps we have gotten to where we are. He is probably the least complicated at this point in time, merely because the Drama of the play has already happened to him. He’s been here before and he sees where it’s going.
Blanche Morton:
Female, 40s-50s. Blanche has remarried very well. She was the ‘pretty one’ and still has the trappings of being a very beautiful woman. She exudes femininity, and if Kate takes after Ben, Blanche takes after her mother. She is the Juxtaposition for Kate. She is soft, emotional, exuberant and outwardly, openly passionate. She can’t keep her feelings inside, and is never a mystery.
