ASF is casting a company of 6 actors to play in two World Premiere productions: The Flag Maker of Market Street and Blood Divided, based on true characters and events during the dawn of the Civil War. The plays will run in repertory and some actors will appear in both plays. Please note the contract dates for each character listed below.
Dr. William Baldwin/George Cowles:
Caucasian Male, early 40s. Educated, articulate, progressive, committed and caring. A man of principle, slightly ahead of his time, who strives to keep his family safe. Has problems expressing familial love. Willie’s father. Doubles as George Cowles in FLAG MAKER: A Market Street shop owner and Union sympathizer who also owns slaves, Cowles finds himself torn when he is asked to make the first Confederate flag. Contract runs 12/17/10-3/20/11.
William Yancey/William Bibb:
Caucasian Male, mid 40s. Born in South Carolina but raised in New York. A lawyer with a gift for oration – the consummate politician. Obsessed, compassionate about his cause and family, idealistic in his own way and a strong believer in a personal code of honor. Impulsive with a quick temper. Doubles as William Bibb in FLAG MAKER: A former lawyer from a wealthy family, Bibb is an outspoken Unionist who possesses a quick wit and biting tongue, which often gets him into trouble. Contract runs 12/17/10-3/20/11.
Willie Baldwin, Jr.:
Caucasian Male, 18+ to believably play 15. Naïve, impressionable, idealistic and ambitious. A young man trying to make sense of a chaotic world. Strives to live up to his father’s expectations and reputation. Contract runs 12/17/10-3/20/11.
James Hale:
African American Male, mid 30s-early 40s. A free black man, carpenter and father. A realist who is an impeccable observer of human nature. Illiterate but intelligent with great common sense. Like Baldwin, he is caring and compassionate but better at expressing feelings. Progressive in his expression of his freedom. Contract runs 12/17/10-3/20/11.
Mae:
African American Female, late 20s-early 30s. Mae is a slave woman owned by George Cowles. She is a talented seamstress who can read and write, making her a valuable commodity to Cowles. Educated, hardworking, passionate, and strong, she longs to be reunited with her husband, Wisdom, after they were separated during an attempt to escape slavery. Actor must carry a tune; role requires a cappella singing of traditional spirituals. Contract runs 12/28/10-3/20/11.
Lydia Frost:
Caucasian Female, late 20s-early 30s. A Confederate social climber and loyalist who is devoted to the cause.
