BREAKDOWN
Actors Theatre of Louisville 2025-26 Season
In reference to the descriptions below – these are descriptions of the characters as identified in the script and in collaboration with the creative team. They are not meant to be exhaustive of who should play these roles and we seek to cast expansively and intentionally. We acknowledge the history of systemic exclusionary practices and are working to dismantle barriers to theatre-making and auditioning for performers of all races, ethnicities, national origins, gender expressions, body types, and abilities.
We also recognize that most characters are written on the binary (use he/him or she/her pronouns) and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with.
All dates subject to change.

SEEKING:
Performer - (any pronouns) This role is for a deaf/hard of hearing actor who is fluent in ASL and comfortable with spoken English, multiple characters with a range of communication — some using ASL and others using spoken English. A SINGLE PERFORMER DOUBLES AS ALL THREE OF THE FOLLOWING ROLES:
- JAMES MADISON – (he/him) 40s+, a reincarnate version of the real-life former US President. A Founding Father who is perhaps less popular than his counterparts, but no less accomplished. FDR and Madison have taken a shine to each other in the great beyond... if FDR’s the popular kid, Madison is the brainiac good friend. Decorous and less gregarious than FDR but excited to be included. Madison is representative of the guests’ apprehension at the start, and models how to open up. Also unafraid to question FDR. Speaks... properly.
- SMOKEY THE BEAR – (no specified gender identity) Timeless fuzzy life-size bear-suited version of the Park Service icon, who, like the icon, mixes bear and human attributes. Smokey’s kindhearted simplicity may seem naïve or youthful, but like FDR, Smokey has experienced a lot... just tries not to get bogged down by the weight of it. Grounded wisdom with heart. Embodies the best American qualities: a hard worker, steadfast, optimistic, genuine, hopeful. A nonverbal character aside from bear sounds, Smokey communicates using ASL as well as invented gestural bear language. Smokey’s physical communication speaks volumes.
- ELEANOR ROOSEVELT – (she/her) 40s+, a reincarnate version of the real-life former First Lady. You feel her presence as soon as she steps into the room. Poised and witty, but entirely relatable. The most genuine of all the characters. She holds her own with FDR, and it’s clear that they have maintained a deep respect for each other, despite many past ups and downs. Like in their real lives, she is one of the few people who can challenge FDR and make him face things he’d rather avoid. Even keel. Speaks with an easy assurance and should not have much affectation to her voice. She’s just real.
FDR - This role is already CAST.
