NICK LAINE - M, white, 50s. The proprietor of a boarding house that will soon be foreclosed by the bank. Caretaker for his wife, who suffers from early onset dementia but who, prior to her decline, told him she had fallen out of love and was finished with him. He sees everything slipping away and tries to do the right thing despite his many flaws.
ELIZABETH LAINE - W, white, 50s. Nick’s wife. She suffers from dementia, though we frequently see flashes of her blunt, plainspoken personality. Her moments of lucidity come and go, but she is always watching.
MARIANNE LAINE - W, Black, 19. Nick and Elizabeth’s adopted daughter. She is unexpectedly pregnant and balks at the idea of being married off for convenience to the elderly Mr. Perry. She yearns to fly away, even if she can’t see clearly how to do so just yet. Tenderly cares for her mother Elizabeth.
GENE LAINE - M, white, 20s. Nick and Elizabeth’s son. An aspiring writer whose ambition is in conflict with his ennui and self-destructive tendencies. He yearns for adventure and an artist’s life but is stunted and frustrated.
MRS. NEILSEN - W, Black, 30s. A tenant in the Laines’ boarding house. She is having an affair with Nick, but even so is nurturing to Elizabeth. She is growing frustrated by Nick’s emotional unavailability. She is waiting on an inheritance from her late husband, and she sees this as a springboard into a new start, though she discovers that life’s plans don’t always work out as expected.
MR. BURKE - M, white, 50s. A former factory owner. Now destitute, he has big ambitions about a financial comeback. He still comports himself like a big shot but privately harbors frustrations and insecurities. He is unaware that he carries an air of defeat.
MRS. BURKE - W, white, 50s. Married to Mr. Burke. She used to live the good life and now feels debased from living in poverty. Like her husband, she still comports herself with elegance though is much more realistic and determined than he. She doesn’t know how to be poor, but she is no snob. She seeks distraction and escape from her circumstances, even if it means dabbling in morphine use.
ELIAS BURKE - M, white, 30. Son to Mr. and Mrs. Burke. He is developmentally disabled. While his spirit is generally gentle, he struggles with a lack of impulse control that can sometimes manifest with accidental physical violence. He seeks the affection of his father, though often finds himself the object of his father’s frustrations.
JOE SCOTT - M, Black, 20s. A boxer and guest at the boarding house. He carries many secrets, including a wife and child whom he has abandoned. He was wrongfully convicted of a crime he didn’t commit and is now on the run.
REV. MARLOWE - M, white. A Bible salesman who arrives at the boarding house in the dead of night with Joe. He is a mysterious person whose capacity for darkness initially reveals itself in subtle ways, but reaches a more direct crescendo when he believes his back is against the wall.
MR. PERRY - M, white, 60s-70s. A shoe mender. Lonely widower. Seeks to marry the young Marianne. His intentions may appear pure on the surface, but Elizabeth, who has known him for decades and still holds on to distant memories despite her condition, reveals his problematic history of lechery and sexual harassment, much to his chagrin.
DR. WALKER - M, white, 60s. Knows everyone. Has struggled with morphine addiction, though he tries to manage it on his own. He is kindhearted. Serves as a narrator of the story, so he often speaks directly to the audience with insights about the other characters.
KATE DRAPER - W, white, 20s. Gene’s ex-girlfriend. Still harbors feelings for Gene, but has decided to unstick herself from her current circumstances and marry another young man. This character also joins as part of the ensemble.

HEADMASTER STEPHAN MARROW - African-American/Black. He is the headmaster of Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys and the youngest ever to hold the position. He is competent and put together, yet approachable. Probably has a lot riding on his shoulders. He is trying to save something. Not sure if that is himself or the school… maybe both. Uncle to Bobby.
PHARUS JONATHAN YOUNG - Teenager; student at Drew Prep. African-American/Black. Sings Tenor. There is a determination about him that is unyielding. He uses humor and faith as a shield to hide his genuine emotions from people and circumstances. There is a rhythm to how he speaks. His words craft worlds. He is musically gifted, can sing, and arrange music. He is most at home in the school choir. ***This character has intimacy with the characters AJ and David. MR. PENDLETON – Older than Headmaster Marrow. White man. Once marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a mover and shaker during the Civil Rights movement. A visiting teacher at Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys. He questions if he still has the power and gumption to make a difference in these young boys' lives. He puts his foot in his mouth and is awkwardly funny.
ANTHONY JUSTIN AJ JAMES – Teenager; student at Drew Prep. African-American/Black. Sings in the choir. Plays basketball and is on the school team. Always looks fresh and can cut hair. He is a quiet, steady force. The type of confidence that needs no words or forcing a situation. However, he will speak up when he needs to. He is the closest person to Pharus at school. They are also roommates. ***This character has partial to full nudity within the play. All intimacy/nudity will be choreographed under the supervision of an intimacy choreographer.
BOBBY MARROW – Teenager, student at Drew Prep. Sings Tenor. The level of audacity inside him allows him to be reckless. Or is that just the hubris of youth? Or the fact that he comes from a wealthy background and is a legacy Drew student? He is also the nephew of Headmaster Marrow. Kindling within him is ambition that is a full fire by the end of the play. He knows how to turn a joke. He misses his mom – he bullies Pharus. ***This character has partial nudity within the play. All intimacy/nudity will be choreographed under the supervision of an intimacy choreographer.
JUNIOR DAVIS – Teenager; student at Drew Prep. African American/Black. Sings Baritone. He does not always pay attention to his school lessons. However, he is no stranger to hard work, which in turn enables him to meet people where they are. Best friends with Bobby Marrow. This character witnesses intimacy and violence between David and Pharus. This character has partial to full nudity within the play. All intimacy/nudity will be choreographed under the supervision of an intimacy choreographer.
DAVID HEARD – Teenager; student at Drew Prep. African-American/Black. Sings in the choir. He is nervous about things beyond what the average eye can see. He tries to walk a path that he has forged, but often succumbs to peer pressure. He is just trying to finish his high school experience with a clean slate. He wants to be a pastor. He is really close to his faith. Carries it like a cloak that sometimes keeps him too warm. Friends with Junior and Bobby. The character has full nudity within the play. ***This character has intimacy with Pharus.
