Valerie Curtis-Newton (Kia Corthron’s THE VENUS DE MILO IS ARMED, Constance Congdon’s THE MIDWIFE’S APPRENTICE) directs a production of Arthur Miller’s classic where the central families are African-American.
Seeking:
Joe Keller:
African American, late 50s to early 60s. A big man with a big heart who loves his family. He is an affable, even charming man. Shrewd. A man plagued by the crime of his past. He covers the strain and pressure with a smile and an easy air.
Kate Keller:
African American, 50-55. A woman of uncontrolled inspirations and an overwhelming capacity for love. Elegant beyond her station. She suffers fools lightly aware that appearances are important. She mothers without thinking it comes naturally to her. An iron fist in a velvet glove. Religious.
Chris Keller:
African American, 30-35. A lean, friendly, very smart – savvy but also idealistic man. An affectionate and extremely loyal man. A veteran who has returned home still believing that war should change things, and angry that the world he returns to has not been changed.
Anne Deever:
African American, 22-28. An attractive, smart, strong willed and extremely principled woman. She is kind and gentle but willing to take a stand to make things different despite her nature. Politically minded.
George Deever:
African American, 30-35. A tightly wound, burdened , and explosive man. Miller describes him as “a wry, self-controlled man, an easy talker, but with a wisp of sadness that clings to even his self-effacing humor.” He has an affinity for the underdog. He is drawn to Chris’ idealism.
