Stage Right Theatrics Announces Second Annual Conservative Theatre Festival In January Image

Stage Right Theatrics, the country's only conservative theatre company, will present its second annual Conservative Theatre Festival from January 26-28, 2018 at the Shedd Theatre in Columbus, Ohio.

"We had a very successful inaugural Festival in January, 2017," says Robert Cooperman, playwright and president of Stage Right Theatrics. "Since then, American Theatre Magazine has reached out to me and we will be featured in an article later this fall. We also had a number of people asking us to mount another Festival. My plan is make the Festival a yearly event so we can give conservative playwrights all across the country an opportunity to be heard."

Six short plays will be featured, which was the same format as the first Festival. This time, however, the Festival will run three nights instead of the original one night.

The Conservative Theatre Festival will be presented at the Shedd Theater (the Columbus Performing Arts Center, 549 Franklin Ave., Columbus, OH 43215) on Friday, January 26 and 27, 2018 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, January 29, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10 and will be available online in December or at the door.

The whole idea of a conservative voice in theatre has been met with derision and scorn by the keepers of the arts in this country (and abroad). A number of years ago, Lisa Goldman, the artistic director of the Soho Theatre (London), commented about conservative theatre: "What would a right-wing play have to offer? Anti-democracy, misogyny, bigotry, nostalgia of all kinds?" This sentiment has been echoed incessantly on both sides of the pond and it continues to be the bludgeon by which the theatre world keeps conservatives at bay. "All we want is a place at the table with our LGBT, Latino/a, African-American, and women's movement colleagues. Stage Right Theatrics provides an alternative point of view that I am hopeful will improve understanding, cooperation, and coexistence. We do not preach hate and should not allow our adversaries to define who we are. Perhaps through theatre-that most universal of art forms-we can start to build bridges," said Cooperman.

Stage Right Productions, Inc., a non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization promoting conservative-themed plays and the artists who create them. Our motto is Disagreement Does Not Equal Hate.
