During the Song Dynasty (960-1279), general Yue Fei is framed and executed by the ruthless prime minister Qin Hui, who also has Yue's house confiscated. The general's son, Yue Lei, flees the soldiers with his mother and younger brother, but they become lost in flight. On the way, Yue Lei meets a young woman Yulian and asks her for help. The girl hides Yue Lei in a wardrobe. Yulian’s brother suspects his sister of a dubious relationship with the young man and they argue, but when their mother discovers who Yue Lei is, she stops their argument and even marries Yulian to Yue Lei.

Liu Xiu, first emperor of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 AD), being drunk, has executed by mistake his lords and generals Yao Qi, Deng Yu, Chen Jun, Cen Peng and Du Mao, all of whom are his faithful followers and have made great contributions to the establishment of the empire. Ma Wu, another lord who has also rendered outstanding service, commits suicide in the court by hitting his head on the palace floor. Realizing his mistakes, Liu goes to the Imperial Ancestor Temple to mourn with deep grief over the deaths of his comrades-in-arms. Hallucinating, Liu, who imagines these wronged and slain people are pleading for their lives, dies of fright.
