Joe's Pub at The Public Theater debuted in October 1998 and has quickly became one of New York City's most celebrated and in-demand showcase venues for live music and performance. The consistently sold out, Happy Ending Music and Reading Series, chosen by New York Magazine and NY Press as the best reading series in NYC, and singled out by the New York Times Magazine for helping to "Keep downtown alive," features the most interesting storytellers, writers, musicians, raconteurs and personalities, and requires the readers to take one public risk, while the musicians, who perform two short sets with their original, lyric-driven music, are required to play one cover song and try to get the audience to sing along. MICHAEL SACKLER-BERNER

Michael Sackler-Berner's songs showcase clear, catchy poetry about the confusion and excitement of being young, motivated and in love in our strange modern world. His songwriting and guitar playing is influenced by the classic troubadours of the sixties and his sonic palette has drawn comparisons to modern artists like Ben Harper, Paolo Nutini and Ray LaMontagne.

Michael's music has been licensed on Sons of Anarchy (FX), Law and Order (NBC), and CBS Football. He is currently working with Grammy winning producers Steve Jordan (John Mayer, Keith Richards) and David Kahne (Regina Spektor, Paul McCartney).

Featuring a charismatic performer and legendary sidemen like Jim Keltner, David Mansfield, and Liberty DeVitto, Michael's concerts have earned a reputation for authentic delivery and serious musicianship.

LIFTED CREW

Lifted Crew is a New York City based hip-hop band that engrosses the listener with its eclectic concoction of soul, funk, and R&B. This 10-piece powerhouse ensemble consists of two lyrically conscience MC's, three remarkable vocalists, hard hitting horns, and an explosive rhythm section. The Lifted Crew's innovative sound is a product of their diverse musical and cultural backgrounds, allowing them to create songs that intelligently bridge the gap between music lovers, hip-hop heads, and the everyday listener alike.

 

The Lifted Crew most recently have hit the road with hip-hop legend Slick Rick in addition to opening for Just Blaze, Kid Cudi, Cyril Neville, Brand Nubian, Brother Ali, Trombone Shorty and Vast Air among others. The horn section has also recently collaborated with Ryan Leslie, India.Arie, Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek. Allen Toussaint

Allen Toussaint, one of America's greatest musical treasures, returns for his now-famous New Orleans brunch series. Singer, pianist, songwriter, arranger and producer - the New Orleans native and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee has been making hit records for over forty years. His massive influence on American music reaches deep into the idioms of rhythm and blues, pop, country, musical theater, blues and jazz. Some of the best known hits penned by Toussaint include: Ernie K-Doe's "Mother-in-Law;" "Fortune Teller," recorded by both Benny Spellman and The Rolling Stones; the Lee Dorsey hit "Working in the Coal Mine", also recorded by Devo and The Judds; and the Grammy-nominated "Southern Nights," recorded by Glen Campbell. The master has produced such artists as Etta James, Albert King, Chocolate Milk, The Meters, LaBelle, Ramsey Lewis, John Mayall and Dr. John, and has been covered by and/or performed with the Pointer Sisters, Bonnie Raitt, The Judds, Robert Palmer, Otis Redding, The O'Jays, Boz Scaggs, Johnny Winter, Ringo Starr, Paul Simon, Chet Atkins, Lenny Kravitz and Elvis Costello, among others. Robin Spielberg

Justin Bond

Recently described as "A bar of gold in the new depression" by Hilton Als in the New Yorker, singer, songwriter and Tony-nominated performance artist Justin Bond is an Obie, Bessie and Ethyl Eichelberger Award winner and was named one of the top 40 favorite New Yorkers by Time Out New York and was listed by Time Out London as one of England's 50 Funniest People. His debut EP Pink Slip was released in July 2009. In 2008, he won rave reviews for his GLAAD nominated show Lustre which premiered at PS122 in the East Village and then went on to tour the UK with stops in Manchester, England as part of the It's Queer Up North Arts Festival and in a critically acclaimed run at London's Soho Theatre. Also in 2008, Justin appeared at The Southbank Center in London in the title role of Sinderella an original musical written by Martyn Jacques of The Tiger Lillies. In 2007, he premiered Justin Bond is Close To You, a reinterpretation of the classic Carpenter's album Close To You performed in its entirety as part of Joe's Pub in the Park in Central Park and subsequently presented by The Sydney Opera House in Australia. He regularly Emcees the performance series Weimar New York which has played in such varied locations as the SFMOMA, The Speigeltent, and Joe's Pub at The Public Theater in New York.

As one-half of the Performance duo Kiki and Herb, Justin has toured the world headlining at Carnegie Hall, The Sydney Opera House, London's Queen Elizabeth Hall and starred in successful runs on Broadway and off-Broadway. Kiki and Herb have released two cds, Do You Hear What We Hear?, Kiki and Herb Will Die For You at Carnegie Hall and a DVD Kiki and Herb Live at the Knitting Factory.

Film credits include a starring role in John Cameron Mitchell's feature Shortbus, Charles Hermann-Wurmfeld's Fancy's Persuasion as well as Imaginary Heroes and Jon Moritsugu's Mod Fuck Explosion. In 2006 Bond completed his MA Scenography at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London. Justin credits his career as a queer performer to Kate Bornstein who cast him as Herculine Barbin in her ground-breaking play Hidden: A Gender in 1991.
