Wadsworth Replaces Stein as Director of Met Opera's 'Boris Godunov,' 10/11-3/17

Stephen Wadsworth will direct the Metropolitan Opera's new production of Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov, replacing Peter Stein, who has withdrawn for personal reasons.

As previously announced, Valery Gergiev conducts, with René Pape singing the title role for the first time at the Met. The cast also includes Ekaterina Semenchuk (Marina); Aleksandrs Antonenko (Grigory/the pretender Dimitri); Oleg Balashov (Shuisky); Evgeny Nikitin (Rangoni); Mikhail Petrenko (Pimen); and Vladimir Ognovenko (Varlaam). Sets are designed by Ferdinand Wögerbauer, costume designs are by Moidele Bickel, and lighting by Duane Schuler. Apostolia Tsolaki is the choreographer.

The new production opens on Monday, October 11, with later performances on October 15, 18, 23 mat., 25, 30 mat., March 9, 12, and 17. The October 23 matinee performance will be transmitted worldwide as part of The Met: Live in HD series.

Stephen Wadsworth made his Met debut directing the company premiere of Handel's Rodelinda in the 2004-05 season. He subsequently directed a new production of Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride in 2007 and is the head of dramatic studies for the Met's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. He has directed many opera and Theater Productions around the world, including Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Seattle Opera in 2004.
