Edo de Waart will conduct Der Rosenkavalier on January 1, 6, 9 mat., and 15, instead of James Levine. De Waart conducted Der Rosenkavalier for four performances in October in place of Levine, who had withdrawn because of his recent back surgery. Since there is such limited time for rehearsals for the January performances, de Waart has agreed to complete the run. Levine is currently rehearsing the new production of Les Contes d'Hoffmann which opens December 3.

Der Rosenkavalier features Renée Fleming as the Marschallin, Susan Graham as Octavian, Christine Schäfer as Sophie, Eric Cutler as the Italian Singer, Thomas Allen as Faninal, and Kristinn Sigmundsson as Baron Ochs.

The January 9 matinee performance of Der Rosenkavalier will be transmitted live to movie theaters around the world as this season's fifth installment in The Met: Live in HD series.

De Waart conducted four performances of Der Rosenkavalier earlier this season at the Met, replacing Levine at the time of his surgery. De Waart made his Met debut in 1998 leading Die Zauberflöte and returned the following season to conduct Le Nozze di Figaro. He is currently Music Director of the Milwaukee Symphony and serves as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and Conductor Laureate of the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest Holland. De Waart is widely recognized as a conductor of both opera and concert repertory with the world's leading opera houses and orchestras. He has led Der Rosenkavalier at the Paris Opera.
