The Metropolitan Opera's commitment to making its performances widely available to the public continues with its Opening Night Gala performance of Wagner's Das Rheingold on Monday, September 27, at 6:45 p.m.
In Times Square, the performance will be transmitted live onto seven giant screens - the most ever for a Met event - with 2,000 seats available on a first come, first served basis. In Lincoln Center's Plaza, one giant screen will be affixed to the façade of the Met and 2,500 reserved seats will be available. The new production of Das Rheingold marks the beginning of the Met's first new Ring cycle in more than 20 years. It is directed by Robert Lepage, conducted by Met Music Director James Levine, and stars Bryn Terfel, who brings his much-anticipated portrayal of Wotan to the U.S. for the first time.
Tickets for the Lincoln Center plazacast are limited to two per person and will be available beginning at noon on Sunday, September 26, at the Met Box office only.
Admission to the Times Square transmission does not require tickets. Approximately 2,000 seats will be available for the public on a first-come first-served basis, with additional standing room provided. The performance will be seen on seven giant screens, including the ABC SuperSign, American Eagle, Clearchannel's Spectacolor HD, MTV, News Corporation-Sony Times Square, Reuters/Nasdaq, and Toshiba screens.
Funding for the transmission to Times Square and the Josie Robertson Plaza at Lincoln Center has been provided by Bloomberg and the Metropolitan Opera Guild, with additional support by Public Funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, The City of New York.
