The Ohio State University Department of Dance to Host Dance Downtown 2015, 11/13-14

The Ohio State University Department of Dance presents its annual Dance Downtown concert at 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 13 and Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Capitol Theatre, Riffe Center, 77 S. High St.

This season's program includes works by new faculty member and alumnus Daniel Roberts, former dancer with the Merce Cunningham Company; Distinguished Professor Bebe Miller; and a Doug Varone piece staged by guest artist Eddie Taketa, a Bessie-award winning choreographer and 20-year member of the Doug Varone Company. New "short" works created by Mitchell Rose, Norah Zuniga Shaw and a dance-and-glass piece by Dave Covey will also be spotlighted.

• Doug Varone: Varone's Of the Earth Far Below is characterized by energetic movement accompanied by Steve Reich's spirited music. Staged by EddieTaketa, this piece is presented by arrangement with Dova, Inc., Doug Varone and Dancers.

• Daniel Roberts: Pacific Trace, inspired by the diversity of environments found on the big island of Hawaii, is defined by robust choreography and powerful music.

• Bebe Miller: Events and Other So-Called Virtues addresses manifestations of human interactions and is accompanied by familiar pop music.

• Mitchell Rose: 18 Beginnings uses humor to explore the idea that "You can't judge a book by its cover, but you can tell a lot about a dance by its beginning."

• Norah Zuniga Shaw: Lets Talk Climate Change employs dance improvisation and multimedia to contemplate the changing climate and distant forces of change in our lives.

• Dave Covey: Orb uses large glass vessels, light, sound and video to create a changing landscape reminiscent of deep sea diving.
