Paul Taylor Dance Company to Perform at Merrill Auditorium, 11/6

The Paul Taylor Dance Company remains one of the worlds most highly respected and sought-after ensembles bringing to life the wordless stories and unforgettable characters created by choreographer Paul Taylor. Considered the greatest living pioneer of America's indigenous art of modern dance, Paul Taylor has created 139 dances since 1954, with many attaining iconic status. Known for covering a breathtaking range of topics within his dances, recurring themes include life and death; the natural world and man's place within it; love and sexuality in all gender combinations; and iconic moments in American history. Continuing to win public and critical acclaim for the vibrancy, relevance and power of his creations Portland Ovations brings the Paul Taylor Dance Company to Portland for a performance of works that covers several decades of Mr. Taylor's brilliance, Dust (1977), Mercuric Tidings (1982), Piazzolla Caldera (1997). After the performance a question and answers session will take place from the stage with dancers from the company.

On Tuesday, November 5th at 3pm Ovations Offstage and the Paul Taylor Dance Company will be offering a Modern Dance Masterclass at Portland School of Ballet, 517 Forest Avenue #2. One hour prior to the performance at 6:30pm in the Green Room at Merrill Auditorium, Ovations Offstage offers a pre-performance lecture, Shapes and Stories: Paul Taylor's Diverse Choreography where Todd J. Coulter, PhD., Asst. Professor of Theater and Dance at Colby College, will present different genres of work within the Taylor canon and how the night's program fits into his scope of choreography.
