When Japan's top calligrapher, Isa Hirano, puts brush to canvas she attempts to mine the depths of her subconscious, hoping a deep-seated truth will surface in her art.

In Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre's upcoming performance, Brush Up, spiritual guides, in the form of four of Duckler's dancers, will lead Hirano on her artistic journey. Accompanied by LA-based musician Chris Garcia, playing indigenous instruments, the four muses will inspire Hirano as she paints a room-sized canvas, but as negative space turns to positive space each dancer will find his or her own liberation in the movement. Fed by the energy of the painting, the dancers will evolve: starting as someone else's muse and ending as their own.

Brush Up celebrates Duckler's decades-long commitment to cultural exchange and bringing international artists to Los Angeles.

Brush Up is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs. The program is co-sponsored by the Brand Associates.
