Dancemakers to Present ROSE PORN by Zoja Smutny
DANCEMAKERS presents the world premiere of ROSE? PORN, created by Resident Artist Zoja Smutny, with music by Toronto DJ and record producer Victoria Cheong, running November 5-7, 2015.
ROSE? PORN is a live cinematic sound work in which the audience plays part in making the architectural space. The work is intended for an intimate audience, where people are invited to circulate -- to sit, to walk, to lie down, to close their eyes, to take pictures, to check out . . . Throughout the duration of an hour, the performers build environments in which a "dance" or "song" can occur. Where and how these installations take form varies, always in relation to who is in the room, and what shape the room takes according to who is there.
Zoja Smutny is the current Resident Artist at DANCEMAKERS. Smutny recently completed her Masters, Solo/Dance/Authorship at UDK in Berlin. Smutny's main body of research involves a collaborative practice with Toronto visual artist Guntar Kravis. Her dance video Between Time, which she created with Kravis, screened at the Court Metrage at the 64th annual Festival des Cannes in 2011 and again in 2012 in New York City. Smutny's solo and group work has been presented in Prague, Athens, Berlin, Vienna, Montreal, Halifax, Toronto and Mexico.
Victoria Cheong is a multi-disciplinary artist working in music, performance, video and installation. Her artistic practice also includes ongoing collaborative work with dancers and musicians, experimentation with projections, and organization of cross-disciplinary art events. She makes music as part of New Chance, and performs with Jennifer Castle and Isla Craig in the vocal improvisational trio IC/JC/VC. Cheong also curates the Toronto label Healing Power with Wolfgang Nessel.
DANCEMAKERS is opening its doors to a multiplicity of new artistic perspectives and activities as a place for artists to develop their practices and for audiences to engage with dance on a deeper level. Working with a new wave of artists who deconstruct established dance codes and conventions, DANCEMAKERS will challenge the expectations artists and audiences place on dance, and the ways in which they create and experience it.
