Rachel Barton Pine, a consummate violinist and master of the viola d'amore, leads Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) Baroque Conversations on Thursday, February 9, 2017, 7:30 pm, at Zipper Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. The program includes Vivaldi's Concerto in D major for Viola d'amore and Orchestra and Concerto in D minor for Viola d'amore and Orchestra, two of his eight concertos for viola d'amore. Also featured are Pisendel's Imitation des Caractères de la Danse and Locatelli's Concerto No. 12 in D major, from L'Arte del Violino, "The Harmonic Labyrinth."
Pine, hailed by the Washington Post as "an exciting, boundary-defying performer who displays a power and confidence that puts her in the top echelon," is celebrated as a leading interpreter of great classical and contemporary works. She is an avid performer of Baroque, Renaissance and medieval music on Baroque violin, viola d'amore, Renaissance violin and rebec.The Chicago Tribune praised her "deft, stylish playing," adding "In everything, the spirit and sensitivity of Pine's playing were informed by her mastery of the instrument's intricate technical demands." Hailed by the Washington Post as "an exciting, boundary-defying performer who displays a power and confidence that puts her in the top echelon," Pine is celebrated as a leading interpreter of great classical and contemporary works. Her prolific discography of 30 albums reflects her passion for the classical warhorses, as well as her interest in promoting contemporary composers and exploring historic music that has been neglected.
Pine will perform on her original-condition, 1774 Nicola Gagliano 12-string viola d'amore. The top of the instrument was made from the very same tree as the top of her original-condition 1770 Nicola Gagliano violin. Viola d'amore is an instrument of the violin family with 14 strings: seven played with the bow, and the others resonating passively for a silvery tone.
According to Pine, she is dedicating her performance to the memory of legendary conductor Sir Neville Marriner, the first music director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. In August 2016, Pine spent time with Marriner to discuss their scheduled January 2017 recording of the Elgar and Bruch violin concertos with the BBC Symphony. The album will now be released as a tribute to late conductor in January 2018 on Avie with Andrew Litton conducting. Pine and Marriner previously collaborated on Mozart: Complete Violin Concertos with The Academy of St Martin in the Fields, which charted at number three on the Billboard classical charts in 2015.
