The first Los Angeles Philharmonic Green Umbrella series performance of the 2014/15 season showcases acclaimed ensemble So Percussion performing at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Tuesday, October 7, at 8 pm. The program features innovative works for percussion produced by two of Bang on a Can's co-founders, David Lang and Michael Gordon - Lang's the so-called laws of nature for four percussionists which was commissioned for and premiered by So Percussion, and Gordon's Timber, a piece played entirely on six 2x4 pieces of wood called simantras. LA Phil New Music Group members Principal Timpanist Joseph Pereira and percussionist James Babor join the members of So Percussion for this performance of Gordon's physically and technically demanding tour-de-force.

The Green Umbrella concert marks the second S? Percussion appearance at Walt Disney Concert Hall in the 2014/15 season. The group performs the U.S. premiere of Lang's man-made, with Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil a few days before.

The innovative and unique Green Umbrella new music series, overseen by LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams, is at the heart of the LA Phil's mission to maintain the life and health of contemporary music. Currently in its third decade, the series offers five concerts during the 2014/15 season performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group. Remaining concerts for the 2014/15 Green Umbrella series are: Conductor/composer Matthias Pintscher leading a program featuring the West Coast premiere of his own songs from Solomon's garden for baritone and ensemble, featuring Evan Hughes (Dec. 9, 2014); John Adams conducting a performance of the U.S. premiere of Olga Neuwirth's Hommage à Klaus Nomi (Jan. 13, 2015); a program of Italian-modernist works with Gustavo Dudamel and violinist Jennifer Koh performing Giacinto Scelsi's Anahit (March 10, 2015); and Adams with soprano Hila Plitmann in a program of LA Phil-commissioned world premieres from Chris Cerrone, Sear Friar and Dylan Mattingly (May 26, 2015).

For over a decade, S? Percussion has redefined the modern percussion ensemble as a flexible, omnivorous entity, pushing its voice to the forefront of American musical culture. Praised by The New Yorker for their "exhilarating blend of precision and anarchy, rigor, and bedlam," their activities range from commissioning new works by notable composers (including Steve Reich, David Lang, and Steve Mackey), to their own music, to creative collaborations with many different types of artists. They have been featured at many of the major venues in the United States, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. As a group, their educational programs include a new appointment as performers-in-residence at Princeton University, a percussion department at the Bard Conservatory of Music, and the annual So Percussion Summer Institute at Princeton University. S? Percussion has released 16 albums, many on the Cantaloupe Music label. S? is: Eric Cha-Beach, Josh Quillen, Adam Sliwinski, and Jason Treuting.
