Pianist Chelsea Randall to Present AMERICAN MAVERICKS Celebrating Modern Black American Composers

Pianist Chelsea Randall will present the New York launch and live recording session of American Mavericks, a performance, commissioning and research project dedicated to new and rarely heard piano repertoire by 20th and 21st century Black American Composers, on Saturday, July 16 at Scholes Street Studio in Brooklyn at 7:30pm.

The solo recital will feature overlooked gems including Dorothy Rudd Moore's monumental "Dream and Variations," George Walker's "Guido's Hand: Five Pieces for Piano" and contemporary pieces by Jonathan Bailey Holland and Regina Harris Baiocchi, among others.

Following the NY launch, Chelsea will take American Mavericks on the road with a series of concerts and lectures across the United States, at concert halls, non-traditional venues and educational institutions.

The American Mavericks project aims to amplify Black American voices in classical music and contribute to the expansion and reframing of the Western canon. Featured composers include: Julius Eastman, Undine Smith Moore, Daniel Bernard Roumain, Dorothy Rudd Moore, H. Leslie Adams, Joyce Solomon Moorman, George Walker, Regina Harris Baiocchi, Jonathan Bailey Holland, Mary D. Watkins, George Lewis, and emerging composers. NY-native pianist Chelsea Randall is a multifaceted artist who seeks to create fresh dialogues between the old, new and undiscovered as a performer and collaborator. Recent appearances include a series of livestream recitals shining light on works by Robert Palmer and Ruth Crawford Seeger, made possible in by a grant from Live From our Living Rooms and solo appearances in California, New York and the Tri State Area. Highlights of the 2022-2023 season include a collaboration with kora virtuoso Malang Jobarteh supported by New Music USA's Creator Development Fund and the launch of American Mavericks, a project dedicated to piano repertoire by modern Black American Composers. As a soloist, Chelsea has appeared at venues from Weill Recital Hall and Alice Tully Hall in NY to Clare College at Cambridge University, UK and has been a guest artist at the Orvieto, Pacific and Colby festivals. She is the recipient of research and performance grants from Conservatoire de Paris and McGill University among others. Chelsea is the Co-founder and Artistic Director of EXTENSITY Concert Series in NY, which aims to promote diversity and equity in classical and new music. Website: https://www.chelsearandall.com/
