BWW Showstopper: Getting the Jobs Done - Bates-Campbell (R)EVOLUTION OF STEVE JOBS Wins Grammy for Best Opera Recording

The Mason Bates-Mark Campbell opera, THE (R)EVOLUTION OF STEVE JOBS--which debuted at the Santa Fe Opera in summer 2017--walked off with this year's Best Opera Recording at the Grammys on Sunday night. Michael Christie conducted the Santa Fe Opera orchestra, and the cast was directed by Kevin Newbury, including Sasha Cooke, Jessica E. Jones, Edward Parks, Garrett Sorenson & Wei Wu. It was produced by Elizabeth Ostrow.

The opera--the first for composer Bates and the latest for librettist Campbell, whose SILENT NIGHT with composer Kevin Puts won the Pulitzer Prize for music--was commissioned by Santa Fe Opera, Seattle Opera (where it opens on February 23), San Francisco Opera (where it will be part of the 2019-2020 season), the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, with support from Cal Performances. The opera is set at a time when Jobs was confronting his own mortality--as he was dying from cancer--circling back on the events that shaped his personal and professional life.

THE (R)EVOLUTION OF STEVE JOBS was the most popular new opera in Santa Fe Opera's history. In May 2018, the recording was issued under the Pentatone label in May 2018.The original production featured direction by Kevin Newbury, scenic design by Vita Tzykun, costume design by Paul Carey, lighting design by Japhy Weideman, projection design by Ben Pearcy for 59 Productions, and sound design by Rick Jacobsohn and Brian Loach.
