ASO with Violinist Joshua Bell Performs BRAHMS VIOLIN CONCERTO This Weekend

Renowned violinist Joshua Bell will join Music Director Robert Spano and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) to perform the Brahms Violin Concerto tonight, May 29, May 30, 2014, at 8:00 p.m., and May 31, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. in Atlanta Symphony Hall at the Woodruff Arts Center. Mr. Bell's most recent performance with the ASO took place in fall 2011.

The program will also include the world premiere of Asimov at Star's End by Charles Zoll, winner of the third Rapido! Composition Contest. Mr. Zoll, a native of Tuscon, AZ, is a recent graduate of the University of Arizona and is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

Rapido!, which was founded in 2008 by the Atlanta Chamber Players and the Antinori Foundation, promotes the creation of new works for chamber ensembles and symphony orchestras by composers of varying experience.

The national finals of the Rapido! contest were judged by Mr. Spano and Atlanta School of Composers members Jennifer Higdon and Michael Gandolfi. Upon winning the contest, Mr. Zoll received a $7,500 commission to write a full orchestral composition for the ASO. Additionally, he expanded his winning chamber piece into a 15-minute work that was premiered last fall by five chamber ensembles: the Atlanta Chamber Players, Boston Musica Viva, Fifth House Ensemble of Chicago, Voices of Change of Dallas, and Left Coast Chamber Ensemble of San Francisco. He also participated in a two-week residency at the Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts in Georgia.
