In 1966, as a 19-year-old boy from Three Rivers, Mich., John F. Holm followed his family's tradition by enlisting in the United States Navy, a tour he thought would be uneventful until he was deployed into a war zone in South Vietnam. He tells this powerful story in his unique and personal memoir, "The Dirty Boots: The Stories of a Reluctant Warrior" (published by Trafford Publishing).

For the next grueling year, Holm performs the duties of a fleet marine force medic, caring for wounded and dying soldiers. Dubbed "Doc John" by his comrades, he soon became entrenched in a strange, dangerous world, where he became both witness and reluctant warrior.

Whether he was patching up wounded comrades or placing Band-Aids on the scrapes of native children, Holm somehow managed to do the impossible job, even as the world was falling down around him. He not only learned the heart-breaking lessons of war, but he survived them and found himself in the process.

These are the experiences of a different kind of soldier, who manages to traverse a minefield of emotional upheaval and can still tell his stories with honesty and self-deprecating humor, exemplifying the resiliency of the human spirit.
