One of the icons of the music world, Jimmy Webb, appeared at The Iridium last night, March 6, and will follow up with a performace tonight, March 7. Tonight, there will be a 8:30 & 10:30 show. Below, BroadwayWorld brings you a look back at Webb's performance from last night!
Over the past 40 years, Jimmy Webb's accomplishments as a composer, arranger, songwriter, and performer have made him a truly iconic figure in the music world. The only artist ever to receive Grammy awards for music, lyrics, and orchestration, Jimmy's name can be found on a staggering number of songwriter halls of fame, lifetime achievement awards, and "best singles of all time" lists. His songs, however speak for themselves. A short list of the amazing string of hit singles that Jimmy has written over the years must include "By The Time I Get To Phoenix," "Wichita Lineman" (performed by Glen Campbell); "Didn't We" (Richard Harris); "Up, Up and Away" (the Fifth Dimension); "Easy For You To Say" (Linda Ronstadt); "The Moon's A Harsh Mistress" (Joe Cocker); "The Highwayman" (Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson)...and that's just the tip of the iceberg!
While most of Jimmy's songs may be more familiar in their recordings by other artists, from Frank Sinatra (who declared "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" the greatest torch song ever written) to Shawn Colvin, Jimmy's own voice is the perfect instrument for expressing the vividly romantic emotions that drench his songs; his recent CD, Live and at Large, makes this perfectly clear.
Lauded as "one of the real, real geniuses" by the late Sammy Cahn, as "one of the most innovative and musically proficient songwriters of our generation" by Billy Joel, Jimmy himself says simply: "I like words. I like the way they clash around together and bang up against each other, especially in songs."
