Bach and the Baroque

BACH AND THE BOHEMIAN GYPSIES
Saturday, November 14, 8:00PM
Telemann encountered gypsy music in 1706 as he was leaving Poland, and the experience inspired him, notably in the last movement of his concerto for recorder, flute, and strings. Works by Telemann and Bach are paired with selections from the Uhrovska collection of 1730, a remarkable compilation of 18th century gypsy music that clearly displays the influence of these anonymous virtuosi on their famous colleagues. Ensemble Caprice from Montreal makes its Miller debut.

PROGRAM: J.S. Bach: Polonaises

Concerto in F major, BWV 1057
Italian Concerto, BWV 971 (arr. Matthias Maute)
G.P. Telemann: Concerto in E minor

anonymous: selections from the Uhrovska collection of 1730

ARTIST: Ensemble Caprice; Matthias Maute, artistic director, recorder, and flute

BIOS: Ensemble Caprice is renowned for its innovative interpretations of baroque music. Originally formed in Germany in 1989 and now based in Montreal, the ensemble continues to give concerts in Europe and has appeared at the Vlaanderen Festival in Bruges, Belgium; the Netwerk-Reihe of the Organisatie voor Oude Muziek in The Netherlands; the International Recorder Symposium in Stuttgart; the Recorder Festival in Stockstadt; and the Early Music Rencontres in Heidelberg. In 2005, the ensemble made its United States debut in the Boston Early Music Festival and has subsequently appeared in many parts of America, with additional tours of Israel and Taiwan. Closer to home in Canada, the ensemble has its own concert series at Redpath Hall in Montreal and was recently nominated for the Conseil québécois de la musique's prestigious Prix Opus award in three different categories. A recording featuring the music of Fux, Caldara, and Badia was released in June of 2007. Ensemble Caprice's most recent recording project, for the Analekta label, focuses on a unique, anonymous collection of early gypsy music (1730) from Eastern Europe and works by Vivaldi.

Matthias Maute is recognized as one of the foremost recorder players of his generation, and has also earned an international reputation for his talents as a traverso player as well as a composer. In 1990, after finishing his studies in Freiburg and Utrecht with Baldrick Deerenberg and Marion Verbruggen, he was awarded first prize in the prestigious Musica Antiqua Competition in Belgium. Four years later, he won the Dutch Impresariat Chamber Music Competition with Trio Passagio. Maute is the artistic director of Ensemble Caprice, for whom he has developed highly original programs. In addition to his work in chamber music, Maute is the first flautist of the Baroque Trinity Consort Orchestra in Portland, Oregon, and he also plays with the REBEL Baroque Orchestra in New York. Maute's compositions hold an important place in the world of contemporary recorder music and are frequently heard in concerts in Europe and North America. Much in demand as a teacher at workshops in the United States and in Europe, Maute has been featured at early music festivals around the world, including those of Boston, Amherst, Bruges, Berlin, Kassel, Stuttgart, and Berkeley. He is a professor at McGill University in Montreal.
