KINKY BOOTS Takes Home Top Prizes in South Korea's Musical Awards

Kinky Boots took South Korea by storm earlier this year, marking the first international production of the Tony-winning musical. Now according to the Korea Joongang Daily, the musical has taken home top prizes at this year's 9th Annual Musical Awards. The show was awarded not only 'Musical of the Year,' but Kang Hong-seok, who played Lola, also earned a 'Best Lead Actor' award from the Korea Musical Theater Association.

With a Tony Award-winning score by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, a book by four-time Tony Award-winnerHarvey Fierstein, and direction and choreography by two-time Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell, Kinky Boots opened on April 4, 2013 on Broadway and continues its U.S. National Tour.

The show, which has broken all box office records at the Hirschfeld Theatre, recouped its costs in October 2013, after just 30 weeks on Broadway. The original cast featured Billy Porter, Stark Sands, Annaleigh Ashfordand Lena Hall.
