It seems the worst effects of Hurricane Irene on New York City, which was downgraded to Tropical Storm status just a few hours ago, are over.  Flooding has been reported in the lower lying areas of New York, due to the overflowing of the Hudson and East Rivers and nearly 1 million people are without power in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut areas.  Nearly 4 million people are without power nationwide. However, the city was spared most of the damage expected, as the storm largely bypassed the city entirely. The tunnels and bridges have reopened.
