Adelaide Repertory Theatre's next production Quartet is a moving and comical tale about a group of ageing opera singers reunited in a retirement home for musicians.

The retirement home's annual concert to celebrate composer Verdi's birthday is disrupted by the arrival of Jean, an eternal diva and former wife of one of the residents. Will the musicians be able to put their differences behind them to ensure the show goes on?

Adelaide Repertory Theatre's cast of four will take to the Arts Theatre stage for the play, written by Academy Award winning playwright and screenwriter Ronald Harwood, from April 9-18.

The play is directed by Sue Wylie and stars some of Adelaide's finest local actors, Russell Starke, Brian Knott, Julie Quick and Jean Walker.

Ms Wylie said Quartet would take audiences on a journey into the bittersweet world of facing up to age and mortality, and triumphing.

"It's alternately bawdy, sad, insightful, hysterically funny and ultimately, a celebration of life. The body might decline, but the spirit never dies," she said.

The play was adapted for the big screen in 2012, with the film directed by Dustin Hoffman and starring Dame Maggie Smith and Billy Connolly.

The Adelaide Repertory Theatre is Adelaide's oldest, continuously running theatre group. The company, founded in 1908, continues its proud history of presenting affordable theatre in South Australia.
