The Public Theater announced today that Tony Award winner Denis O'Hare has been cast as The Baker in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's beloved musical INTO THE WOODS, directed by Timothy Sheader with co-direction by Liam Steel. INTO THE WOODS will be O'Hare's Shakespeare in the Park debut. Variations Theatre Group's acclaimed production of David Rabe's HURLYBURLY will end its limited run today, March 1st at The Chain Theatre. The original production of HURLYBURLY took New York by storm in 1984, directed by Mike Nichols. Although the long-running Broadway hit was presented in three acts, David Rabe pared his script into a leaner two-act version for the 2005 Off-Broadway revival starring Ethan Hawke and Bobby Cannavale. It is this revised version which is presented by Variations Theatre Group by special arrangement with the playwright. (more...)

The three-week tour, July 16 to August 3, will bring free Shakespeare to audiences who have limited or no access to the arts before a sit-down run at The Public Theater, August 6-25. The New Group has announced today complete production dates for David Rabe's Sticks and Bones, the first production in the company's 20th Anniversary Season. Previews begin Tuesday, October 21, in advance of an Official Opening Night on Thursday, November 6. As announced earlier, Sticks and Bones, directed by Scott Elliott and featuring Richard Chamberlain, Nadia Gan, Holly Hunter, Morocco Omari, Bill Pullman, Ben Schnetzer and Raviv Ullman, will play a limited Off-Broadway engagement through December 14 at The New Group at The Pershing Square Signature Center (480 West 42nd Street). Beginning August 15th, The Harbor Stage Company launches the third and final chapter of its critically acclaimed inaugural season with David Rabe's tragic farce Sticks and Bones. The production marks the Cape Cod premiere of the much lauded, rarely produced play, a searing dark comedy whose Broadway production earned the 1972 Tony Award for Best Play. The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Executive Director Patrick Willingham) and Theater for a New Audience (Founding Artistic Director Jeffrey Horowitz; Managing Director Dorothy Ryan and Chairman of the Board, Henry Christensen III) will present THE WALLACE SHAWN-ANDRÉ GREGORY PROJECT in 2013, a celebration of the remarkable 40-year collaboration between Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory. The two plays, THE DESIGNATED MOURNER and GRASSES OF A THOUSAND COLORS, will offer a long overdue retrospective of Shawn's work as well as an opportunity for him to appear on the New York stage again under Gregory's direction. The Public Theater presented Shawn's first play in New York, Our Late Night, in 1975, directed by Gregory. (more...)
