Canton Symphony Presents World Premiere of Bela Fleck's Second Banjo Concerto, 3/19

Anticipation for the World Premiere of Béla Fleck's second banjo concerto has been mounting.  Coming off his recent Grammy Award win for Best Folk Album, he will premiere the piece with the Canton Symphony Orchestra (CSO) on March 19 at 8:00pm at Umstattd Performing Arts Hall, adjacent to the Zimmermann Symphony Center. The musical parts and conductor's score arrived at the Canton Symphony offices about two weeks ago and were delivered to the appropriate musicians and Music Director Gerhardt Zimmermann who will conduct the piece.  All involved will prepare themselves for the full orchestra rehearsals with Mr. Fleck which begin the week of March 14.  Until then, no one really knows what to expect except the composer himself. ?For two storied nights in 2006, singer, songwriter and composer Rufus Wainwright performed a love letter to Judy Garland's Judy At Carnegie Hall concert with a tribute of his own, Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall. Backed by a 36-piece orchestra conducted by Stephen Oremus, he performed Judy's epic 1961 Carnegie Hall performance in its entirety. A dazzling spectacle performed in front of sold-out crowds, it was critically lauded and remains a pinnacle of success amidst a career full of them. (more...)

Porchlight Revisits Staged Concert Series to Close with CHESS

Porchlight Music Theatre and Artistic Director Michael Weber are proud to announce the final production in the third smash season of Chicago's "lost" musicals in staged concert series, Porchlight Revisits Chess, music by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, lyrics by Tim Rice and Bjorn Ulvaeus and book by Tim Rice, with direction by Porchlight Artistic Director Michael Weber, choreography by Porchlight Artistic Associate Brenda Didier and music direction by Jimmy Morehead. Porchlight Revisits Chess is presented for three-nights-only Tuesday, May 3 through Thursday, May 5 at 7:15 p.m. and is performed on the set of Porchlight's Dreamgirls (previews begin April 8) on nights when there are no performances at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave. Tickets for Chess are $30 in advance and $35 at the door the night of the performance. All tickets include access to the popular pre-performance event, Behind the Show Backstory, a multi-media presentation, created and hosted by Weber, that discusses that evening's production including the show's creative history, juicy backstage gossip and more. In the second half of the CSO's Festival: Vienna 1900, CSO Music Director Rossen Milanov will conduct the Mozart & Schubert program featuring guest pianist Stewart Goodyear. In homage to Franz Schubert, the great pianist and composer Franz Liszt took Schubert's piano solo and transcribed it for piano and orchestra. The resulting Wanderer Fantasy is a dynamic and colorful work combining the talents of these two musical giants. Mozart's final and most masterful symphony anchors this absorbing and intriguing program. (more...)

Grand opera--lavish in scale, setting and voices--certainly has its place, but, oh, the joys of hearing Cavalli and Faustini's bawdy, early baroque charmer LA CALISTO in a theatre with fewer than 100 seats! The Juilliard Opera production not only proved a great showcase for the singers, dancers and instrumentalists involved but for the opera itself, which is still infrequently heard and should be better known. The age of the internet makes collaboration a whole lot easier. International artists Danny Q Parker (Hamburg) and Kula Borelly (Toronto) had longtime plans for a collaboration and finally moved on the idea Spring 2015. Danny created the melody and sent it to Kula. When after a few weeks they both were happy with the sound, they wanted to add a vocalist to the track.
