BWW Review: St. Louis Actors' Studio Presents ROCK 'N' ROLL
by Chris Gibson - Nov 14, 2010

We probably take the cultural impact of rock 'n' roll for granted, not fully comprehending the effect this raw, powerful blast of rebellious freedom has had worldwide, where it has somehow managed to shape generations that are far removed from its origins. With his play ROCK 'N' ROLL, Czech playwright Tom Stoppard is able to show us firsthand how this music molded the beliefs, hopes, and dreams of his own youth, and he filters it through a unapologetic, surprisingly sentimental haze that makes for an engaging and compelling ride through time. The St. Louis Actors' Studio is currently presenting a very entertaining and sharply acted and directed production of this work at the Missouri History Museum.

Celebration Revives Women Behind Bars
by Don Grigware - Nov 24, 2009

For gays, it's a camp! For straights - after all, this is a sendup of the prison exploitation films of the 50s seen by a mainstream audience -it's satirical fun! Tom Eyen's WBB has some great oneliners and visual laughs, but does have a tendency to be on one note and is somewhat dated: prison life... shocking? We've seen and heard it all. Nonetheless, the Celebration's revival has a great cast, smooth direction...and with clips of the actual 50s movies on a screen behind to set the tone, the whole ambience is a blast!

Review - Cry-Baby: Deliriously Warped
by Michael Dale - May 3, 2008

Check your good taste at the door and have a blast at Cry-Baby, the deliriously warped new musical comedy based on the John Waters flick spoofing the culture clash between squares and juvies in 1950s Baltimore. While jokes about polio and sexually abusive priests and songs about tongue kissing may not be for everyone, this hilarious and spirited tuner serves up its crudeness and with extra helpings of whipped cream and sprinkles from the first notes of its revved-up overture to the final chord of the play-out music. I laughed for over two hours and when I looked down I saw my toes involuntarily tapping. It's a fun night out.
