BWW Review: Book-It's TREASURE ISLAND – A Swashbuckling Good Time
by Jay Irwin - Nov 28, 2016

I remember my first exposure to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic, "Treasure Island". It wasn't the book but rather an animated version they showed occasionally during Saturday morning cartoons and although I haven't seen that one in years I remember loving it for its thrilling swashbuckling adventure and rich characters including a bad guy who wasn't all that bad even though he was a bloodthirsty pirate. Well I'm happy to say all those feelings from childhood came rushing back the other night as I watched Book-It Repertory Theatre's current adaptation. I mean, swarthy pirates, sword fights, and buried treasure. How can you go wrong? (more...)

BWW Review: Seattle Rep's KING CHARLES III Fails to Live Up to the Hype
by Jay Irwin - Nov 23, 2016

There's always a danger in any kind of entertainment that the show will be hyped up so much that when you finally see it, it cannot possibly live up to the image in your mind. I largely think such is the issue with my lack of zeal over “King Charles III”, currently playing at the Seattle Rep. I had heard so much about this one on how funny and original it was but instead what I got was a play that while interesting, felt long winded and only offered me a few scant chuckles. (more...)

BWW Review: THE FINAL VOYAGE OF X MINUS ONE at Counter-Productions Theatre Company
by Andria Tieman - Nov 14, 2016

As a theatre reviewer, I have the privilege of watching all kinds of productions. Everything from Shakespeare to locally-written original works is up for grabs. Occasionally, though, one needs to bring in an expert, which is what I opted to do for my review of The Final Voyage of X Minus One at AS220's Black Box theatre. It's not that this production is hard to understand, or less entertaining to those who are not intimately familiar with sci-fi, but genre works tend to have a lot of subtle nods and winks that may go over the layperson's head, and I was concerned about missing something important. So I brought in a ringer, in the form of my geeky husband Ryan Michney, and I've included his thoughts below. (more...)

BWW Review: KING LEAR at University Of Louisville - Budding Among The Ruins
by Keith Waits - Nov 14, 2016

As a character, King Lear is the great aging lion, one of what Charlton Heston called the 'man killers' of Shakespeare, and a play that examines the hubris and arrogance in power held too long. In an unusual collaboration, Commonwealth Theatre Center (CTC) and University of Louisville Theatre Arts are co-producing this production, which mixes faculty and students from both institutions among its cast and crew. BWW Review: Compelling and Relevant CLYBOURNE PARK by CPH/CWRU
by Roy Berko - Dec 9, 2016

This country is in political and social turmoil. There is a President-elect who appears will win the Electoral College endorsement, while losing the election by a reported 2-million plus votes. There is a rise of xenophobia, the Alt-right, the presence of hate groups, possible destruction of the health care system, while the liberal-left pleads for protection against sexual imposition, women and gay rights, and clean air.
