BWW Review: ELF - THE MUSICAL Jingles into OC's Segerstrom Center
by Michael L. Quintos - Dec 26, 2016

Upon learning that part of Segerstrom Center for the Arts' holiday programming this season was to finally bring a national tour production of ELF - THE MUSICAL---the 2010 Broadway stage musical adaptation of the popular Will Ferrell holiday movie---to its stage, I was pretty ecstatic. For the most part, ELF---which performs at SCFTA through January 1, 2017---delivers enjoyable laughs sprinkled here and there throughout its two acts, and even offers up a non-equity cast equipped with lovely singing voices. But while ELF - THE MUSICAL is certainly festive and has lots of smile-inducing moments, overall, I felt the presented production felt surprisingly subdued. While, sure, it had plenty of genuinely funny and heart-warming moments, many aspects of the NETworks Presentations production needed to be much more over-the-top, manic, and downright silly.

BWW Review: RING OF FIRE, Johnny Cash Jukebox Musical, Delights at Porthouse
by Roy Berko - Jul 11, 2016

Johnny Cash, 'The Man in Black,' was noted as a somber singer of such songs as 'I Walk the Line,' 'If I Were a Carpenter,' and 'Ring of Fire.' The latter was chosen as the title for Richard Maltby, Jr.'s jukebox musical, now on stage at Porthouse Theatre, which loosely centers on the trials and tribulations of Cash's life. While not autobiographical, per se, there is enough of the tale of the man to gain an understanding of Cash, his music, his strong belief in social causes, and his personal problems.

One of Pittsburgh's favorite sons seems to earn genuine acclaim from his 'passionate' portrayals on stage. Even more than a gifted actor, this national spoken word, and slam poet, is also a father, playwright, and a science aficionado. Smith is preparing to portray the role of Walter Lee Younger in the, upcoming, 'A Raisin in the Sun', in the premiere offering of the, new, Erie Theater Company.
