Philly's Devon Theatre Cancel Inaugural Season After First Productions

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the newly reestablished Devon Theatre in Philadelphia has been forced to cancel their inaugural season after having lost funding from the state. Their current production of JOSEPH...DREAMCOAT will end its run December 13th. The theater, currently overseen by the Mayfair Community Development Corporation, completed productions of Nunsense, The Odd Couple, and Little Shop of Horrors as season openers this year. (more...)

Royal George, 1641 N. Halsted, raised the curtain at 7:30p.m. on Monday, May 3rd, 2010 in honor of Michael Cullen, owner of the Mercury Theater and Cullen's Bar and Grill, and a thirty five-year veteran producer and pioneer in the development of Chicagoland theater as it is known today. Recently suffering from a stroke, Mr. Cullen requires extensive therapy treatments. The evening, directed by Michael Weber, featured Chicago's Entertainer Ron Hawking, Gretchen Cryer (Writer and star of I'm Getting My Act Together) and cast members from Million Dollar Quartet. The evening also featured cast members appearing from some of the many dynamic productions that Michael Cullen produced including Steel Magnolias (Nancy Baird), A Couple of Blaguards (Howard Platt), Pump Boys and Dinettes (Malcolm Ruhl, John Foley, Shawn Stengel, Tom Mendel, Mary Launder, Rick Pickren, Tammy Mader, Liza Jaine, Tiffany Herlien, Shaun Whitely, Brian Burke and Maggie LaMee) & The Irish And How They Got That Way (Jane Baxter, Miller, Kent Lewis, David Girolmo, Justine Serino, and Susan Voelz.). Chicago Tribune Theater Critic Chris Jones made a special appearance that was the highlight of the evening. Thousands of dollars were raised for Mr. Cullen's rehabilitative care. (more...)

Mercury Theatre Faces Uncertain Future

According to the Chicago Tribune, the Mercury Theatre and owner, Michael Cullen will face a $3 million forclosure suit from Ravenswood Bank. As reported by Crain's Real Estate Daily, the Southport Ave. theatre hosted many late-night productions of local troupes until Cullen fell ill earlier this year. In December, Cullen began missing monthly mortgage payments, according to a complaint filed March 9 in Cook County Circuit Court. (more...)

Tennessee Rep Announces 26th Season Productions

Christopher Sergel's stage adaptation of Harper Lee's classic Southern novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, will open Tennessee Repertory Theatre's 26th Season with an October 2-23 run at the Andrew Johnson Theatre at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. Other shows featured during the 2010-2011 season includes Steven Dietz's Yankee Tavern, the acclaimed stage adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps, and the toe-tapping musical favorite Pump Boys and Dinettes. Last season's holiday hit, A Christmas Story, will be revived as a season special and Tennessee Rep has three shows on tap for its popular REPaloud Series of staged readings. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Bear Stage Debuts with Solid Production of PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES Running Through 4/25

It can be difficult and stressful to try and start up a new theatre company. There are just so many things that have to be taken into consideration, and there are always last minute items that pop up at the most inconvenient time. This being said, Bear Stage made their debut at the Jelkyl Theatre in St. Charles this past weekend and, all things considered, presented a pretty solid production of Pump Boys and Dinettes.
