Holm followed his family's tradition by enlisting in the United States Navy, a tour he thought would be uneventful until he was deployed into a war zone in South Vietnam. Terry L. Gould has received the 2013 James Webb Award for distinguished fiction dealing with U.S. Marines or Marine Corps life by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation (MCHF). Gould was recognized for his book "How Can You Mend This Purple Heart?" The fictional tale of combat wounded veterans of the Vietnam era recovering physically, mentally and emotionally is loosely based on his own experience recovering in a military hospital with seriously wounded Marines, Gould said. He was presented the award at its Annual Awards Ceremony Saturday, April 20, at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Va., according to the Foundation.
Ford's Theatre Director Paul R. Tetreault announced the Theatre's 2013-2014 season will open with a new production of The Laramie Project, 15 years after the killing of Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard. The play is presented as the cornerstone production for the Ford's Theatre Society's Lincoln Legacy Project, a multi-year effort dedicated to sparking dialogue in the nation's capital around issues of social injustice and the ideals of equality for which Abraham Lincoln stood. A series of free special programs and events will be offered in connection with the play in September/October 2013.
Puppets and live performers enact an enigmatic tale of early World War II in 'King Executioner,' the newest creation of Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre written and directed by Vit Horejš. The play is loosely based on 'When you are a King, You will be an Executioner' ('A Jak Krolem a Jak Katem Bedzies,' 1968) by the Polish magical realist novelist Tadeusz Nowak (1930-1991). In a return engagement with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO), The Collegiate Chorale will perform 11 concerts in Tel Aviv and Haifa with the IPO under the baton of renowned conductors Zubin Mehta and Riccardo Muti. They will then travel with the IPO to Austria to make their Salzburg Festival debut, the first performance there by an American choir since the Chicago Symphony Chorus appeared in 1989.
