The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Executive Director Andrew D. Hamingson) presented the New York premiere of THE LAST CARGO CULT, created and performed by Mike Daisey and directed by Jean-Michele Gregory in the Public’s Newman Theater. THE LAST CARGO CULT began previews on Thursday, December 3 and will continue through Sunday, December 13. The official press opening was on Monday, December 7 at 7 p.m. Single tickets are currently on sale. (more...)

Berkeley Repertory Theatre is currently presenting the theatrical spectacular, Aurélia's Oratorio this holiday season. Aurélia Thierrée grew up in the circus and has charmed audiences around the world with this display of stage illusion. The show was conceived and directed by Aurélia's mother, Victoria Thierrée Chaplin, who - along with her husband, Jean Baptiste Thierrée - created Cirque Bonjour, Cirque Imaginaire, and Cirque Invisible, innovative troupes that inspired Cirque du Soleil. Performed in the state-of-the-art Roda Theatre, Aurélia's Oratorio opens December 9 and closes January 24. (more...)

Tarell Alvin McCraney's The Brother/Sister Plays have officially launched at the Public Theater. The series Part 2, The Brothers Size and Marcus; or the Secret of Sweet, directed by Robert O'Hara, began previews on October 21. Part 1, In the red and Brown Water, hits the stage. Tina Landau directs. McCraney, one of America's most acclaimed young writers, returns to The Public to complete his trilogy following the success of The Brothers Size in 2007. Spike Lee Talks PASSING STRANGE To BlackBookmag.com

It is difficult to imagine a greater fan of the recent Tony Award-winning Passing Strange than Spike Lee. After seeing the show twice in the same weekend during its stint at The Public Theater, Lee's "nightmare," he tells Blackbook.com was that "at some point it was going to close and that it was just all going to all go away." Hence the inspiration for his new documentary, "Passing Strange," which documents the stage show he filmed in July just prior to the show's closing. After winning several awards at Sundance, "Passing Strange" is now playing at the IFC in New York, on the IFC channel and will soon be broadcast on PBS. Lee sat down this week with original creators Stew and Heidi Rodewald and Blackbook.com to discuss of "Strange." (more...)

Berkeley Repertory Theatre announced last week that it will extend the show due to record-breaking sales and unprecedented demand for seats. Originally scheduled to close on October 11, this hotly anticipated world premiere has been extended three weeks and will now play through Sunday, November 1.
