According to Variety, Asian-American actor James Shigeta, known for his role as 'Wang Ta' in the 1961 film adaptation of the Broadway musical FLOWER DRUM SONG, died today, July 28, 2014. He was 81.

The Pittsburgh CLO Guild has announced that The Constance T. Rockwell, Dolores and Walter Bold and the Charity Randall Foundation Scholarship recipients will be honored at a luncheon on Wednesday, August 6 at the LeMont at 11:00am. The Pittsburgh CLO Guild offers college scholarship assistance to deserving students pursuing performing arts training, many of whom will be honored at this special luncheon. Also to be recognized are Moira, George and Morgan Davison for their service as Pittsburgh CLO Guild Ball Chairs.

The Tony Award winning 1949 musical South Pacific comes to the Off Center Theatre in Kansas City, Mo. from August 7 through August 24. This enduring love story is set on a tropical island during World War II. Richard Rodgers wrote the music with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and the book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan. Sarah Crawford directs the Musical Theatre Heritage production and provides musical direction with Jeremy Watson.

GABRIELLE STRAVELLI, the celebrated pop/jazz vocalist, has extended her exclusive engagement at The Metropolitan Room through August. After sold out shows and amazing reviews - including a rave in The New York Times - a special encore performance has been added on Wednesday, August 13, in addition to remaining shows on Tuesday, July 29 and Thursday, July 31 at 7:00 PM. Stravelli, called an 'outstanding singer' by The Wall Street Journal, is known from her tours with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, appearances at the 92nd Street Y and her long-running Soho jazz brunch. Her new show, directed by nightlife legend Marilyn Maye, includes selections from her debut CD Waiting in Vain previews tracks for her upcoming sophomore release. The evening features classic standards like 'While We're Young' and 'Goody Goody,' pop hits such as 'Young Folks' (Peter, Bjorn and John) and 'Have You Ever Seen the Rain' (John Fogerty), in addition to distinctive original compositions. She is joined by Joshua Richman on piano, Pat O'Leary on bass and Eric Halvorson on drums.

The hills of Kansas City will soon come alive with The Sound of Music, and talented performers from Broadway and Kansas City stages will lead the way to Starlight Theatre. The classic musical from Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II is the fourth production of Starlight's 2014 Broadway season. It opens tonight, July 25 and runs seven consecutive nights through Thursday, July 31. A special Monday night performance is scheduled for July 28.

The National Tour of THE GERSHWINS' PORGY AND BESS, winner of the 2012 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival, ends on a high note grossing $1,030,014 for the week closing July 20, 2014, making it the highest-grossing week on the tour. More than 15,000 people attended the show in Charlotte.

At The Library for the Performing Arts, we house and preserve materials of the artistic process - the playwright's drafts, the composer's handwritten manuscripts, the artist's private correspondence, recordings, and more - and provide free access to these treasures for researchers, students, performers, and arts enthusiasts from around the world.
