The Palmer House Hilton is proud to announce dinner, dancing and an all-star performance in celebration of the centennial of Frank Sinatra's birth, Saturday, Nov. 28 in the legendary Empire Room within the Palmer House Hilton, 17 E. Monroe St. The event begins at 6 p.m. with a cocktail hour followed by, a three-course gourmet dinner with choice of entrée, and wine service then a special “Tribute to Frank” featuring Chicago's top cabaret performers Joan Curto, Shelley MacArthur, Paul Marinaro, Beckie Menzie, Tom Michael, and Johnny Rodgers. Monterey Jazz Festival kicks off the weekend's activities this Thursday with another edition of the 'Concert for Kids' at the Monterey County Fairgrounds, with Monterey Jazz Festival's Next Generation Jazz Orchestra performing a free 45-minute set for students enrolled in Monterey County public schools. Annenberg Center Live has unveiled a dance season that includes a quintet of diverse artists celebrating the wide landscape of dance in modern times. The new series begins with a one-two punch of a rare local appearance by Urban Bush Women (October 22-24) and Twyla Tharp's 50th Anniversary Tour (October 30-November 1) and continues in 2016 with performances from Ballet Hispanico (February 5-6), Dance Theatre of Harlem (March 3-5) and Meredith Rainey Dance (April 1-2). Theater history buffs have two reasons to seek out a production of RED VELVET, Lolita Chakrabarti's historical drama. First, it sketches in part of the true story of the first great black classical actor, Ira Aldridge. Second, it depicts the beginning of the shift from old-fashioned 19th century declamatory acting style to something closer to the naturalism of the 20th century, a naturalism that still dominates today's stages.
